  • CBR1k vs S1000R - ScottJ, Get in Here

I saw these graphs in a magazine comparison today and thought they were pretty interesting. When you consider that you spend most of your time riding between 5k-10k rpms, the Honda has a clear lead in torque and even an edge in hp.

The Honda clearly runs out of steam up top, where the BMW shines, but by that time your exceeding every speed limit in this country and you're still in first gear. I think the BMW would own the CRB on the dragstrip, but on the streets, I'll bet the BMW owners are wondering why their bikes don't seem all that much faster than their buddies liter bikes.

ScottJ mentioned he was considering the BMW, and I said I'd rather see him back on a Honda, so this is just a little more evidence to back-up my recommendation.

Yeah, I'm saying that the BMW will beat it in a race, but the Honda looks to have more power on tap in the rpm ranges where most riders spend most of their time.

I was surprised thought that the BMW was only $550 more than the Honda. I thought they were a lot more expensive.

Ya, you know even having spent quite a bit of seat time on the 1k bikes, I might take a pass on the bimmer as a next bike. Hell, its been a while since I've ridden for starters. I'm trying to wrap my head around all that power on a stock platform, freaking crazy.

I'm not nuts about the front fairing style, but I could get used to it. The one I looked at up here in NY was this chartreuse / greenish color, it really did catch my eye, and I could see what I might change about it cosmetically to tweak to my liking. I think the guy wanted 13k for it, and given the performance, I was looking at it like (well gosh, I could tie up quite a bit of cash in another bike on top the cost of the bike, to bring it to this bike's level). Sort of a unique factor too on the S1000R.

I've been looking, but does this bimmer compete in WSB or any other events against the rest of the field? Forgive the ignorance...

LOL a year ago when we were building the pipe, kawi hit everybody with a gag order and told us to shut the fuck up. then they recalled all the bikes that were sold. LOL at their bullshit marketing and flat out lying. I will give them credit though, if you want the baddest 600 by 4-5 hp, buy a kawi from 09-up. Honda and yamaha do the same stuff. hondas are always over hyped, overweight and under-powered come daytona time. Yamaha's, well they sound funny with that stupid crank, and most race teams have gone back to the old stuff.....suzuki keeps plugging away without the bullshit marketing. If the average public knew how hard it was to make more than 3hp/cubic inch, they might start to question bullshit hp claims.

After BMW’s S 1000 RR stunned the sportbike world in 2009 with its outrageous horsepower numbers, we were all set for Kawasaki to even the score with its all-new ZX-10R that debuted in 2010.

                  2010
                  Horsepower: 162.96 @ 12,300 rpm
                  Torque: 75.75 lb-ft @ 9000 rpm

In 2011 they revamped the ZX10r and increased HP numbers.

                        pretty underwhelming, huh?

a 03-04 could make that with bolt ons!

With $3k worth of bolt-ons, sure.

I've ridden the BMW and while it's a beast, I didn't think it lived up to the hype. Could just be because I didn't spend much time above 10k (it was Teach's bike in the SuperLot in STL), but even having said that, it'd be hard to pick one of the Japanese rivals when the BMW is so competitively priced (new vs new).

I guess it all comes down to styling, budget and which one makes your pee-pee wiggle. I like the personality and styling of the new R1, but honestly, probably wouldn't trade my '02 954 for any of them. I just love my 954 that much, even if it isn't going to win any dyno contests. It does everything I need, and more.

Seems like the THIRTY hp advantage in peak power will make you forget about what it lacks in the mid-range.
