A buddy of mine has one and thats about the best he can do on a tank...while everyone around him can average between 150-200 miles on a tank. For everyday versatility.....the swiss army knife of bikes...the Honda VFR is an excellent do everything bike..its fast enough, handles well, is comfortable, and you can find them fairly cheap. The old ZRX is a big, heavy, sloppy handling copy of anything made in the early 80's. The bandit 1200, CB1000, and 919 Hornet are MUCH better bikes.
the 2002-2006 vrods have a 3.7 gallon tank, starting in 2007 they came with a 5 gallon. they make a kit to fit a 5 gallon in the 02-06, but it costs a couple hundred bucks

Got a guy who has a clean 88 FXR SE who wants to trade. 17k miles with pipes, braided lines, seat, etc. Looks clean. Just dont know crap about the evo motor, tranny, and all around quality of older HD's.

For me it'd be between a K1200 or an ST1050 for your price range. The K1200 for more touring, the ST1050 for more sport. You are a couple of grand shy for a Ulysses, that's one bike Harley really needs to bring back.

I like my 1125R a lot, they can be had for $6000 all day long. It's not the most comfortable bike in the world but Saddlemans has a gel seat now and there are Clubman bars out that'll help that. Look for an 08 model though, the 09s have tons of problems with their stators and there isn't a fix.
