  • V Star Revamp

Ive been playing with different things on this bike, having a lot of fun trying different things.

The first thing I did after riding a bit was to get a windshield, and thus began my quest against wind. The short windshield I bought didnt do much more than send the wind into my face. I rode a couple of fairing'ed bikes, and shopped ebay and found a HD copied aftermarket. It broke the wind so much better, but highway speeds sucked still. Air was moving over and around me, but the gap under the fairing would allow air up over the top and id get buffeting at my face.

Hence, I test rode a couple of solid fairing bikes. MUCH better on wind, and handled better in wind since the fairing would move the bars while riding.

I searched around, and nobody makes one for my bike. Actually, nobody really makes them period. I did find some cafe types, but that is not where I want to be with it. I searched around, looked at a couple Vetter designs, and thought about some factory stuff. Nothing really caught my eye.

I stumbled on an old 1975 GL1000 that had a very interesting fairing at a cycle salvage. The saga it turned into is a long story, but I got the fairing, bags and even a trunk for a fair price.

Ive stripped it, filled some holes, and mocked it up onto the bike. I think it is going to work well, and solve my buffeting.

I know this isnt everyone's style, and you may or may not like it, but I think its fun, and dig it.

    on to the pics...

    raw:

set the bag up, not mounted, but has good lines, and matches pretty well to the lines of the bike

Mocking the fairing. This is after chopping out most of the guts of the fairing.

Sorry, I took these with my phone, and they wont post up correctly.

I need to tweak the angle a bit, and still have a ton of work on the fairing itself, and making brackets, wiring it up, etc. Then Ill get the bags on, and work on the trunk.

I think it already looks better than the previous fairing. Hopefully it works out for you.

I think this looks loads better than the batwing fairing. Looking forward to seeing it all painted.

i much prefer the batwing fairing. That goldwing fairing almost kind of looks like a road glide fairing on your bike. It'll be interesting and different, thats for sure. Do you not wear a helmet or something? i dont understand the wind buffeting issue? if you're helmet-less I think the road buffeting on your face will be a larger issue when you crash. lol.

I can see why it looks similar to the road glide, they aren't too far off in function.

The buffeting is an issue with or without a helmet, I've tried half and full faced, and they both suck. The air comes up from underneath, and on my full face, it will open the visor if it isn't locked down, and an open face, it catches and lifts it up and back. I had a gust of wind from a truck move it back on my head that it was choking me.

It pulls sunglasses off my face, too.

the only way to keep that wind from coming up underneath is to get lower leg fairings

i have ridden friends bikes with batwing fairings and 10'' windshields and the wind coming from underneath was still there and very annoying. i rode another friends street glide with the shorty 2'' windshield but he had lower fairings, talk about a night and day difference. i was going 75 down the freeway but i shit you not it felt the same as going maybe 15mph on a regular bike with no fairing... they really do make that big of a difference

now you are gonna pay big bucks though for lower fairings, just a heads up. the prices on them are stupid high(anywhere from $350-$500 a pair) but since they are worth it thats why they can charge that much

here is a guy that put them on his v star

here is the rest of his bike

I'd ride it naked and deal with the wind...that's what I do on all 3 of my streetbikes.

In my opinion, both of those farings look like complete and total shit.
