You have a very short band of usable power that comes on all at once. You're only talking 27-32HP, but it feels like it goes from 5-8hp to 30 at a certain rpm. Imagine in a stock mustang with 225hp hitting a 700hp shot of nitrous. For a little guy they can be a handful.
Two strokes are really fun to ride. I wouldn't ride anything else, and as for the " little guy cant handle it comment" I was a 5'4 135 pound twelve year old riding a 2001 Rm 125. He can handle it, and it will be hella fun.

I said handful. And it was directed at his newbie-ness around bikes. At 12, you don't have the sensibilities to understand limitations or what happens if you eat shit and miss work for a month resulting in a job loss.

And yeah, they are fun but matching the right bike to skill set as well as proper terrain are critical to enjoyment.

Do you want a bike that is street legal?

If you dont care about mixing the fuel.....KDX200/220. You can find a good running, clean condition 92-06 model if you do a lot of craigslist hunting for about a grand. 95-06 is the same bike other than different paint....these bikes are bulletproof, easy to fix up, and perfect for trail riding.

If you want something street legal.....I would go with a 4 stroke TTR, DRZ, WRF, etc. You dont need a monster bike so I would say anything over a 250 would be good....the DRZ400 is kind of heavy but is a VERY good bike (I'm biased).

How are the drz's for daily use? I'll have around a 5 mile commute when I get to Denver and am thinking about something along those lines.

Nah street legal I dont care about, you mean like an Enduro? I will just be doing trail riding, and maybe a few jumps, nothing crazy. Like I said before theres miles and miles of places to ride here. I have a truck to get it to places, I dont need to roll down the paved road. Thanks for the advice!

A CRF230F Honda will fit your bill perfect. I have on of these and it is a blast to ride. With a few mods it will have all the power you would want for a while.

I was looking at that and the TT-R230. Both look like the perfect bike for me. What are the big difference besides engine size? The TT-R looks more like what I need since it says it sits pretty low. Thanks!

Both set pretty much the same. The Honda has more available mods. I have put bars, a rev box, spring spacers and air box modifications.

DRZ would easily commute 5 miles on a daily basis although you'll wear out a real set of knobbies in almost no time. The stock dual purpose tires are "ok" for trail riding but I wouldn't try to tackle anything serious on them. The real trick would be to find a set of spare wheels to mount some TRUE sportbike tires on...in which case the DRZ is a BLAST to ride on the street. It's not outrageously quick (its a single cyl. 400) but can travel all day long at 65-70 mph without breaking a sweat...and if you HAVE to get somewhere in a hurry it can do 100 mph with a 190lb rider. I'm still trying to find some spare rims for mine.

Go with the CRF230F...it's the perfect starter bike, and cheap.

Thanks for the info Ram. It will be mostly city driving but I want something that is more upright and can be tossed around like the drz. I would imagine the speed limit doesn't exceed 55.
