  • PreMed woes.

Hey guys. I know that this forum is not really used yet, so I figured I would help it along. I am currently a PreMed/Biology student at SMU, and a few classes are kicking my butt. I am managing ok with Organic Chemistry, but Genetics and Physics are giving me a good pounding. If anyone has any tips, tricks, advice, etc, please post up. I am typically an A+ student so this B- crap is not going to fly with me (or the medical schools when I apply).

    A bit of background:
I am 27 years old, and a transfer student from Brookhaven. I received my AS Degree this past May. I finished with a 4.0, and several recognitions including a full tuition scholarship to SMU. I am very determined to get into med school, and I will be taking the MCAT this upcoming Spring/Early Summer.

    Thank you!

Congrats on getting started - should have went with the poll results from May though.

Keep your eye on the prize. Set small, tangible goals and you'll be finished before you know it. Much like a financial derivative in which a swap is a series of forwards - longer-term, large goals are series of short-term ones.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

People will try to discourage you, don't let them.

      Including you.

I was just giving you shit. You have to do what makes the most sense ... SMU threw tons of money at me too for my masters and I had to make a similar decision. For me, UT had a lot more national recognition.

            Again, congrats.

              No worries sir!

After touring the campus at the other schools I really liked the feel at SMU. Granted, if I could go back in time about 4 months I would have prepped to move to Austin. SMU has been giving me issues with their various graduation requirements which state schools do not have. I will just have to fight the good fight and tough out the rest.

Med schools are easier to get into as less people are applying. Just keep chugging along.

My cousin just graduated med school (LSU-Shreveport), and he said everyone (except his little freakazoid overachieving ass) was on adderall. No bullshit.

If you go into it with the thought that there is no Plan B then you will have a better chance of success. Set small goals on a regular basis and do what it takes to achieve them.
I went to college with no plan for the future. I randomly picked medicine just to see if I could do it and I did. It's not an easy road, but it's definitely rewarding. Good luck.

Med school was not that difficult. It was tedious, but if you put forth the effort, it was manageable.

Most people I have come across in the premed department are also on some sort of dope. Most take adderall to be awake and then lunesta to go to sleep. I want to go into medicine in order to help people get off pills (chronic pain and such), so I am not getting near that stuff.

dont hold your breath. Our society as a whole is a pussy. Everyone needs a diagnosis and a medication to make them complacent with life. It is truly sad. Pain management clinics spring up and are essentially drug dealers. You will never help the epidemic
