Thats great. I think they want production at 76 day 76 night by July. That sounds like to many trucks. Sure dont want a surplus then we get the boot.

Peterbilt will never build too many trucks. They will only build what is already sold. That's the business model. That is how the company stays profitable and in business.

Now in Jan of 2013 according to the folks in the know, expect a layoff. It will come like clockwork. When people tell you that the emissions laws are changing, they will. It will kill truck sales fast and in a hurry. It does the same thing to the diesel engine business.

In January of 2007, as a manager in the plant I got to lay off nearly every person working for me (I was on evenings with the newest people). It will happen. I also laid off people again in April, then in the summer and I think the evening shift was completely gone by '08. It's back now for probably another 2 years.

Talk to anyone that has been there a long time. They have been part of or seen many layoffs.

That doesn't mean it's a bad company at all. That is just the business model. Use this knowledge to your advantage.

Save your extra cash, save your vacation time (you'll get it paid as a lump sum), and make lots of friends. You will get hired back when things pick back up if you want to. Those friends will also lead to opportunities during a layoff. Many guys out there are well connected.

There are also a lot of old guys out there that will retire in the next few years. This is also good for you.

I love my new job, or I'd be trying like hell to get back in there myself. I can easily see building 76 on nights. We did 51 back in '06 before they improved the plant.

At one time during '06 they were building over 150 a day between two plants. Now there is only one plant.

I am still going to be working days at my current company. They told my brother that they are looking at a 5 year run but who knows.
