Work in Denton at Peterbilt

What I was thinking, but then I remembered from when I was selecting a time for the computer test that those were scheduled all the way up to the same week. Being early sometimes creates a long wait on the backside.

I'm just 8 or so miles south on 35w and never have any traffic issues.

How is 35W during race weeks ( like this one )? Or on swap meet weeks such as Pate/Good Guys etc?

It was nothing but one Nascar transport truck after another heading into DFW for the race as I was going out of DFW on I-20

Well Im on the north side of the track so I dont see any of the traffic. 3 in the afternoon going to work is against the grain of any traffic and anywhere from 12:30 to 4:30 am when I head home there is no traffic at all.

Thanks snacksnack! Every little bit of info helps should this work out and I DO have to start looking for places to live asap.

I`ve also been researching the company a lot should I get to the interview and get asked the " Tell me what you know about Peterbilt" question.

I live in east texas out near Gilmer. I moved back from Richardson in `08 to help take care of my mother ( and get her to retirement age ) because she was unable to work. She`s doing better now, and got her first SS ( retirement ) check this month. In the last several years, Ive managed to get the family land paid off. Now she`s going to do a reverse mortgage so she can go do some things she`s wanted to do ( trip to Israel, remodel, koi pond, etc ), and pay me back by helping with a down payment on whatever house I end up buying in DFW.

If I should get hired at Peterbilt, I will probably spend the first 6-8 weeks at Value Place Extended stay. I checked it when I was in town, and it`s < 10 min drive both ways to/from Peterbilt. It`s $260 a week, but that includes everything except laundry, food, and the dishes. Internet is $10 more a week, but Ive got a pad, so I wont need that. I say 6-8 weeks because in Texas, after 30 days it officially becomes a residence which means no taxes - and all taxes paid the prior 30 days are refunded. Which equals a pre-paid week if you take immediate credit instead of waiting a couple months on a refund check. It`s what I did the first time I moved to DFW. Should I get an offer that leaves no advance time to get a reservation there, I`ll simply get a motel room for a few days until an opening at VP comes up.

I will look at apartments as well, but as Rusty said the rents in and around Denton are going to be higher due to the demand. Hopefully should this all work out, that sometime during that first 6-8 weeks I`d find a decent home to buy thats within reasonable commuting time, but not so far north that when a layoff happens, that I`m not too far north for employers located between Dallas & Ft Worth to think I live "too far away" and throw my application in the trash - on a "fill in" job to get through until recalled. If nothing is on the market that fits my location, price rance, etc.... I`m fully prepared to sign an apartment lease should nothing be on the market that fits what I need.

A quick question for everyone. On the email message for the hands on, it was mentioned that steel toed work boots/shoes were "prefered".

I`m going to take the approach that "prefered" means that we`ll be watching to see who actually does wear them -- and judge accordingly.

Rather than just go buy a cheap pair at Academy or some other big box retailer....and have to buy something else later ( if hired ), what are the better steel toed work boots out there that if you knew you were going to be the new guy again would you get?

I used the Walmart brand my first 6 months. That was hard work on frame line and they were 20 bucks swat style. We have 2 different shoe trucks that come up to the plant that will deduct from your paycheck ( 4 weeks which is 2 paychecks though it can take a couple months before it hits) and they have several brands. Redwing tends to be the most popular. You can also go to the Redwing store off university and get 15% off for being a peterbilt employee.

Also i used twisted x cowboy boot square toe boots that lasted comfortably for a year and a half.
Ariats are expensive but very nice as well.
