How to tell if an oven is 120 volt or 240?

I picked up an oven to use it for powdercoating, and I did not even think about 120 or 240 volt ovens... I only have 120 in my detached garage.

The oven has four wires (one is the open ground wire), so I believe that means it is a 120 volts, since 240 volts circuits have the negative as the ground as well (or they are the same thing). Am I thinking correctly?

No stereotyping here! There isn't a plug just open wires.

That sounds like a 240V oven. You would have 2 hot legs, a neutral, and a bare ground for a total of 4 wires.

If it were 120V, I'd expect to see one hot, a neutral, and a ground for a total of 3.

There should be a rating plate somehere on the oven that describes input voltage, current draw, etc. Maybe search the internet by the model number?

This. They may have some newer ones that pull less amperage, etc. But if it's more than 5 years old, it's almost certainly 240v. Of course, gas ovens use 110v but it's strictly for clock/timers etc.

if you look on the nameplate, it should tell you the voltage, wattage, etc...also, if you look at the connection points, does it have "L1, L2, N, G"? L1/L2 = power, N = neutral, G = ground

If its not gas its 240v. If your local I can hook you up on an outlet for it.

The only 130v ovens I've ever seen, were convection type ovens and their usually a counter top type.
