Laminate Floors in Hallway/Bedrooms

over in the Canada forum i showed our living room being redone.
Well my pup tore up our carpet in the bedroom and decided to put the same flooring in our bedroom / hallway.

I want to replace the carpeting in my living room/office and need to start learning about all of the pros/cons of laminate vs natural wood. I'm sure it's not overly complicated, but I need to have someone give me an education.

Are the seams/joints supposed to be random, or were you going for a symetric look?
