I would only worry about that if your area has a lot of complaints of hard water (water heavy with calcium and magnesium). In some cases, it can make deposits, clogging areas of plumbing (especially shower heads. Yoy can tell from your soap sometimes; it won't lather up like it normally would. If the water is too soft, though, it'll be harder to rinse it off of you (and dishes). Have you talked to people around there about it?

Our builder recommended one, so that's why I ask. He is not selling them, he is just saying we should get one.

Cooter - why do you say I don't want one?

the water feels slimy when you shower...

I'd rather replace a water heater every 6 months than not feel clean in the shower

Can't you control the amount of salt and the amount of "sliminess?"

You need one in your area. What town are you in? My brother-in-law is a builder there.

My roommate described it as bathing in lotion water. I don't mind it so much now, but until I got used to it, I was always a little annoyed because I couldn't tell if I'd rinsed all the soap off.

I haven't come across a woman who doesn't love it. It makes their hair soft.

Our water is naturally soft. It took quite a while to get use to it.
