Whole house water softener systems

Wanting one installed in the new house. We're on a well. Anyone have one, and do you like it ? are they a PITA ?

Had one when we lived in central Texas...the house came new with a softener loop because they are pretty necessary down there.

We liked the fact that it stopped our black utensils from turning grey and made showers better.

It was pretty automated...even for a cheap one. Not a hassle at all (including installation).

Was it salt ? was that a pain ? Do you remember brand ?

Yes it was salt.

It was GE I think.

No, it wasnt really a pain at all...just had to remember to add salt every now and then.

I never had one but my next door neighbors used to... I have no idea what brand it was or type but after always having plumbers come out to look at it and work on it they made the company they got it from come tear it out and go without. That was a few years ago and they since sold the house to the new owners.
