We will be in our current home, at least another 2-3 years. We haven't made a final decision on where we want our son to go to school, but the odds are we will be moving in the next 5 years.

We are trying to make the most of the space we have and the 2 areas that are the worst/most cramped are the master suite and the utility room. Our master closet isn't very large, I've got about 6' along the outside wall for closet rods and about 3' along the back wall. We also have a small relief to the right as you enter the closet that is 12-18" deep and 2-3' wide. Our closet rods are full, we have shit stacked all in the floor, and the shelves that are currently in the niche aren't very optimal.

Has anyone used any organizer systems, built, or had something installed to optimize this space? If so, what worked and what didn't?

Things we have identified that we need:

    Shoe rack for her shoes
    belt/tie storage
some way to integrate more hanging rod space

Has anyone had any success installing anything on the back of the closet door? I would like to stay away from anything that hangs over the top of the door in the jamb space, as this type of stuff ALWAYS causes issues. I'm thinking an organizer for ties and belts on the closet side of the door.

The niche would probably be the best space for the shoe racks. I'm not sure how many pairs she has, we currently have a pre-fab 8 cube unit that is full, and a stack of shoes in a couple of locations. I can probably build something in that space that will do what I want it to.

Is there anything that you guys found useful? Waste of space/$$$?

You need to get rid of stuff.... but besides that, can you double stack closet rods?

I have Ikea closet organizers and love it. Looks great and very functional

        Yes, we need to purge.

Double rods MAY work on part of it. It only has an 8-9' ceiling

I don't have a solution except get rid of stuff and maintain the same weight.

My sister just moved into a house and had a whole damn bedroom closed off to be a closet.

If you have a 9 foot ceiling, you should be able to get 3 rods in there. I think we have 9 foot ceilings, and our longer wall has 3 rods. Just enough space to hang shirts, or pants. Nothing long like a womens dress would fit, that goes on the shorter wall where it has 2 rods, spaced further apart.

Sounds like my wife's side of the closet. We have a huge walk in closet, I only use about 1/3 of it, and she still has shit overflowing. The entryway closet has evolved into her shoe closet somehow. I feel for you, brother.

How high is the ceiling? We have 3 shelves in ours with 9 or 10 foot ceilings. Top hanging rod is just a few inches below the ceiling, enough room to easily get a hanger over the rod.
Instead of the shelf being at the very top, it is above the middle rod. This is the set-up along the longest wall, the back wall has 1 area with 1 rod about mid level for the wifes long dresses, and a shelf above that. Room for 2 shoe racks. The other wall has shit against it, and the in wall unit for all the network/phone wiring.

Our builder did a custom built in for our closet. I gave him some ideas and a few measurements for the gun safe and let him run with it. Pretty happy whit how it turned out. They just used particle board and attached it. I'm sure you could do this pretty cheaply.
