  • Need Help with 220 Plug

    I have a 220v outlet in my garage. It's marked 15 amps.

The old lady bought a tanning bed, and the plug is a different shape than the outlet, and it's marked 30 amp.

The switch at the breaker box is marked 30 amp. In fact, it's two actual switches that move together, instead of just one switch for my 110 circuits.

Logic tells me if the bed pulls 30 amps, then it's not good to plug it into a receptacle marked 15 amps. Besides, the two plugs are not the same configuration, anyway. I can cut the power at the breaker box and install a different receptacle, if it's that easy of a fix, but I don't want to screw around if it's going to be too much more difficult than that.

Also, it looks like I'll need about an 18' extension cable for this, based on where I can put the bed. Are there any issues with that long of a run, as long as I buy a quality cable?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I live in a very remote area, and getting an electrician out here is almost impossible, and will cost a fortune.

    Thanks!

I would pull the receptacle and see what gauge wire you have.

This, make sure the wire to the plug is rated for 30A before changing out the plug. Same with the extension cord.

I would suggest looking at the bed itself for a power requirement. The plug is rated at 30A, but the bed may not pull that much.

If you have a 30A breaker on the circuit then you ought to be able to get by with replacing the receptacle. Wires ought to be rated accordingly, but it can't hurt to check the wire gauge to be sure.

Should be alright to use a 10AWG extension cable, but again look at what the bed is pulling.

10AWG is good for 30amps. If it is a really long run, check out Southwire.com. They have a voltage drop calculator that you can put in the distance, amps, etc and it will recommend a wire size.

When I built an extension cable for my welder, I bought some very nice wire at HD but it was expensive. Its very flexible. If you dont care about wire stiffness, just buy some 10/2 romex at HD/Lowes, its cheap.

Nah, she bought a lightly used one from someone online.

                      220Volt extension cord?

Thoughts of using this RV Extension Cord for a 220 V Welder Cart extension cords?

In my case I would need to change the prong plug ($5-10) to use with my 220V outlet.
