    Fridge not cooling

    Last Saturday I noticed that the fridge was not cooling properly. Freezer was fine so I checked the vent and noticed no airflow. Took everything out of the freezer and noticed at the bottom of the back panel was covered in iced. Took the panel off and the freezer coils were frozen so I thawed it out manually. Airflow was restored and fridge cooled up. Also noticed that it took a day for the fridge to cycle back to normal. I never really heard if the heater coils activated and thawed the frost into the drip pan. Just noticed two hours ago that the fridge isn't cooling again. I've done some googling and I'm guessing that the defrost thermostat might not be working at all. Could all of the ice have shorted it out? If I replace that part will the coils stop staying frozen? I don't have the proper tools to test out the heating system and money is kind of tight right now to call in someone to check it out. I've cleaned out the coils underneath the fridge as to not restrict airflow. Any tips would be appreciated. It's a whirlpool side by side and the model number is ED5VHEXVQ01. I see sears has the part in stock, might just try and replace that myself to see if it fixes the issue.

    How cold does your freezer get? I've had this happen and it was because the freezer setting was way too cold.

      If it's this part I have one in my office. My whirlpool stopped cooling all together a few months ago and this part got it going again. They're only sold in a set of two for some reason.

        I've got it set on the recommended settings. I rarely ever move it from there.

          The part I'm looking at replacing is the defrost bimetal. I've read that part is supposed to activate after it reaches a certain temperature and then the coils warm up to melt away the ice.

            good to know. Sounds like what I'll be needing next. This fridge is hella cold...last time I turned it to the warmest setting I think it got even colder
