Worth throwing seed out before the rain?

Ive got about a 12'x10' area freshly roto-tilled and leveled. With all the rain expected this week would it be worth throwing some kinda seed out in it? Part of me says anything is better than nothing but the other part says all the rain will just wash the seed away.

Any suggestions on a seed that will see a lot of sun and little to no maintenance besides getting cut regularly?

I would throw out seed today and water it in then let the rain maintain the watering this week.

I have bad luck. The several hundred dollars worth of seed just washed away.

Why not seed then cover that with wheat straw? I have a huge area out back that I cleared but it didn't want to grow any grass last year. I put some Scott's seed down and covered it with straw.. even through a couple of snow storms and lots of sub 32 temps I've got patches of grass popping up already.
