  • Kitchen Remodel

Well, my cabinet company came back with a kick ass quote on my cabinets installed. I am meeting with a rep next week to get final measurements and talk about layout. Then we wait on the drawings and put them into production.

With that said, what do you guys consider essentials? We have a galley style kitchen so there isn't a lot of flexibility with what we can do. I am planning a cookie sheet shelf and pull out spice rack beside the fridge. Our fridge is right against a wall and we can't open the door all of the way, so we are going to put those to the right of the fridge so that it will open all of the way. I am removing the soffits/furr downs so instead of 30" upper cabinets we will have 42" uppers which will give us some more storage and allow us a place for those items we don't use very often.

Once the cabinets come out, I will be re-working the electric and drywall. I already have under cabinet plugs, I will be adding under cabinet lighting as well.

Suggestions on sinks, disposal, back splash, etc. We are in the process of re-painting and going to a more modern gray pallet, the cabinets will be white with this granite on top:

Our appliances are GE with the slate finish.

Can you open up the wall of the galley to the living? Id rather lose cabinets and open up the view. Put in an island.

I did all drawers on the bottom at my house (almost all). They are much better as far as storage than door cabinets. Under cabinet lighting using a plugmold not backsplash outlets. Crown moulding on the cabinets.

Sink, farmhouse is popular and I like ours. Check out Insinkerator for the disposal. Very quiet. They occasionally go on sale at amazon for $125 or so. Backsplash, I like simple subway tile with white grout, not grey grout.

I could, but we have such little cabinet space, it isn't a viable option. Our stove and vent hood is also on that wall.

Sunrise wood designs. They do all of the cabinets for us in my neighborhood.

I talked to the wife last night and we plan to have them bid a window seat in the bay windows of our nook as well as the vanity for our powder bath and an upper in our utility room so that everything in the house, with the exception of the master bath vanity, match.

Now comes the task of getting the house measured, approving the drawings, and finding someone to install our granite. Does anyone have a contact for a granite installer? I have the material I just need it installed!

I think we are going to go this weekend and pick out our back splash and decide on sink color/style/material.

We are pretty set on subway tiles for the back splash, though we may change it up just a bit and do tiles that are a bit longer and more narrow than the standard subway tile. Most likely with no accent, though we will see what we come across.

Sink will most likely be composite granite in a light color. The big question is single basin or 60/40. Disposal or no disposal?

I used this guy out of Dallas for my marble vanities:
            eremodelingdfw@gmail.com
            (682) 597-4596
I thought his price was fair. Their install time was great.
Im a fan of the single basin sink. You can actually fit large pans in the sink and they are not sticking out everywhere.

I will have to give them a call. I am running into a lot of places that don't do install only.

I am leaning towards the single basin. Any issue running a single basin with a disposal?

no problems for me. Running an Insinkerator disposal on a Kraus 36" single basin farmhouse sink.

Well, we spent our evening trying to decide on paint color and backsplash tile. Once we were thoroughly frustrated with that, we moved on to cabinet layout. I have 2/3 of a kitchen x2 worth of thunder cream granite. So we have 2 options. Option one is to force the cabinet layout to fit one batch of the stone. Option 2 is to blend the batches, so Batch one on the sink side and batch 2 on the stove side and deal with the fact that one pulls a bit more yellow than the other!

I will try and get some pictures tomorrow to show the ideas we are kicking around so I can get some input

Well as with any good remodel, it may be snowballing. New cabinets, new backsplash, new paint, new granite. Well, why in the hell would we put in nice cabinets, expensive (level 3) granite, and leave the $.57/sq ft tile on the floor?

We are looking at putting in wood tile. I would love to do engineered floors, but I don't think I can swing the cost difference for those. Well, if we do the kitchen/nook, it is going to look funny with wood tile in the kitchen and laminate in the family room. So then you have to do the family. Well, might as well do the entry and the hallway. Shit, if we are going that far, we decided we don't like the carpet in the bedroom so we might as well do the bedroom while we are at it...

Who has done wood tile? Pros/cons? What product did you use? Cost/ft?

Wood tile can be nice...just need flat floors or use enough thinset to make it level. Id look into a tile leveling system.

Honestly though, if you want wood, there are plenty of decent options out there that arent that expensive. We did 3/4" solid African Mahogany floors for $3.50/ft. You can get engineered hardwoods cheaper. Check out Floor and Decor. Tiling sucks and tiling a whole house would really suck.

We actually went to floor and decor today. Went to look at wood tile, ended up pickingvthe tile for our backsplash and for our future shower retro.

Right now the cost differential is just too much. I am going to get a quote for material for both from my flooring company this week and go from there. The plan was originally to install engineered wood at some point. Now, with a baby on the way, we are leaning more towards tile. Really it will come down to the cost factor and the difference between paying cash, or doing an 18 month 0% interest type deal and paying it off.

Back to the kitchen...We have decided on white beveled subway tiles. Simple, yet has an intrigueing element. It looks like the cheapest I am going to find for fabrication and installation of my granite is $25/sq ft. with sink cut outs included.

I am looking for buyers for my cabinets and our laminate floors, if I can sell all of that stuff, then we may look into a more expensive flooring option. There is a very good chance this won't be our forever home, and may end up as a rental so I plan to keep that in mind with our decision.

What was the cost on the wood tile? Dont forget thinset and grout adding to the costs. Maybe its just the fact I hate tiling so much, Id rather spend more money on wood over tile and save time.

The tiles are 1.99/sq ft. Not figuring thinset and the fact that I can't do it myself in a timely manner. She found a wood tile at Lowe's that she loves. I have a few friends that have offered to help lay the tile.

I can't remember the quote my company gave me to lay engineered wood. I want to say it was $3-4/ sq ft. Maybe I have it posted in my remodel thread...

Lay your own engineered man... It goes down just like the laminate. Just float it with a locking floor.
