  • redoing fence

I came home from vacation to 2 different parts of the fence laying on the ground from the cheap ass 4x4 posts that were used. They snapped from the bottom and both are on one my neighbors side. I am wanting to pull the remaining 6 posts that are still there and replace the entire side with pressure treated 4x4s and 2x4s and new pickets.

Looking on youtube, going to HF and buying a off-road jack using a couple of 2x4s with some lag bolts drilled into the 4x4 posts and doing that method to pull the posts out with the concrete seems to look like the best way, but I was wanting to check here if there were any other methods without having to go spend the 55$ for that jack to do this.

I have a regular car 2 ton jack that I could possible use?

Hire someone... I did that for two posts myself a few years ago. No way I'd screw with that again. In fact, I just had one guy leave after giving me a quote on a new fence and have another this afternoon. I have no interest in screwing with that again.

the easiest method I found was an old wheel and a chain. hook up to the bottom of the post or wrap around it. run the chain over the wheel and tie the chain to a vehicle. pulls right up. its all about leverage really.

I could get a car to the backyard but that might be a last last last resort option.

I've pulled posts with a hi-lift and yank strap. Only had to do a couple but it was easy work.

Hi-lift hack company makes fence post pullers too.

Another method that can sometimes be used is an engine hoist. but that only works if the post is near a driveway, sidewalk or on very firm ground.

If no one else is going to say it I will. Don't use a 4x4 again. Use a metal pole or you will end up in the same boat you are in now, pressure treated or not.

if this was my forever home I would, but since its not I just need something that will hold up for at least 4+ years

This. .095 steel posts are the way to go.

The cost difference shouldn't be that much.

I use the 3 point on my tractor to pull the post and the auger for the holes.
