  • Master bathroom remodel

I am trying to finish up some things in our house before the baby comes. The master bath is something I want to try and finish up, in addition to the kitchen cabinets and remodel.

We picked this up for a song over the weekend:

I have a slab of Thunder Cream granite to sit on top of it that is going to look killer. I just need to find a granite installer. I will have to re-tile due to the new vanity being more of a furniture type piece with feet.

My biggest decision is what to do with the master shower. Our house is a 3/2 and I am trying to decide whether to convert the master shower/tub combo to a stand up shower, or go back with a shower tub combo. I feel like maintaining the tub/shower combo in the guest bath should suffice and not take a hit on resale value. Walk into the master bathroom and the shower is a nice full tile stand up shower with frame less shower glass. Either way the shower is getting re-done in both bathrooms because they are the old one piece fiberglass units in a biscuit color.

If I go with a stand up shower, should I do cultured marble or just a drop in acrylic from a home store?

So we are planning new tile, rip out the soffit/furr down that is above the vanity and scrape the popcorn ceilings, new vanity, re-doing the shower, and most likely a new commode.

They say going to a dedicated stand up shower, when you don't also have a dedicated tub, will hurt your resale. How much, I don't know. I think that really only matters to certain buyers, not all.

For what it's worth, I'm going to a dedicated stand up shower with no tub when we redo my master bath.

i redid mine and just had ripped the tub out, had a tile guy frame up a half wall and pour a concrete base, then tile away.

i have a stand up shower and a garden tub. id love to remove the tub, expand the shower, and have more room in the bathroom, but I wonder about the resale value as coop said.

          god bless.

I have thought about this too. A stand up shower with dual shower heads and a bench.

I was going to make a thread similar to this today, but figure I can put it in here too.

Our stand in shower has NO top on it. It literally lets every bit of the steam out and the bathroom is too big to let the steam warm it up. What would you guys suggest to do above the shower? I have been draping a towel over the top to keep the steam in to get a warm shower. If not its just warm water on my body with cold air on my head.

I build new construction, after going into a lot of homes, I don't think the tub had ever been used! I almost feel like if it isn't a jetted tub, it isn't used.

we've used our tub MAYBE once a year average since we moved in. Our shower is just big enough to turn around in, and we're dying to take that tub out and make a big walk in shower out of the whole mess.

I just got a tentative price based on 36"x60" pan from my supplier at $395. This is about $100 over what I am seeing for pre-fab pans from the home stores, on the low end. This includes, measure, production, and installation.

Does anyone have a different supplier that may have a better price?

The only one who uses our tub is our daughter for her bathes. I think when she gets a couple years older, we are going to expand our shower and delete the tub.

As far as resale goes, it could go either way depending on the buyer and how the realtor sells the idea. I (of course I'm a dude) would rather have a larger shower with multiple shower stations and more room.

We took out the tub without any regret when we remodeled. I think as long as you have a tub in your house, you are fine. No one uses a tub these days.

If you have the access to tile guys from your work, Id get them to do a traditional mortar pan. Use something like Hydroban or kerdi for waterproofing. Its not cheap but will save you a lot of hassles later if it was going to leak.

I am of the same mindset for resale. I wanted other opinions though. We are in a 1500 sq ft 3/2 so it isn't a home for a large family.

I have gone back and forth on tile vs. marble/pre form. Tile can look great and add a nice wow factor, but as you said, if it isn't done right it can be an absolute nightmare with leaks and mildew. I don't want to have to go through the trouble of shaping the floor of shower, moving the drain for it to look right, etc. The total Sq. Ft. of the bathroom is only 50-60 sq ft so I am planning to re-tile it myself and save that $$$.

For a stand up shower what is considered "wide" enough? I have enough space to build a stand up shower length wise but want to make sure there is enough width.

You may be able to do 30" wide
