  • Crown Molding

We are getting ready to put crown up in our house. I am having trouble with the transition from my family room to the breakfast nook. I have a vaulted ceiling in my family room that dies down to a 9' flat ceiling for the nook and kitchen. It leaves an odd spot at the bottom of the vault where it would meet the crown at the bottom and a void on the back side of the crown at the breakfast nook.

I'm trying to decide what to do, crown in the bedrooms and entry and leave off the family room, figure out a way to make this location work, or plan C that is undetermined at this time.

    corner in question

Crown at the bottom of the vault

Crown on the back side where it comes down the vault

This is the only odd corner. One other option is to just leave that slope of the vault alone. Use a corbel (some call it a pinch block) in the 5 corners I have, giving it a starting and ending location.

I would just end one and start the other on the vault. Paint it all the same color and I dont think it will be that noticeable.

I have thought about that. Just can't convince myself it will look ok. Moreover, I'm not sure I can convince the wife!

Yes it does. We have started remodelling yet again. We started with the nursery and I spent about 2 hours knocking the popcorn down. Without scraping and texturing, I am happy with the end result.

Next up is the kitchen. We have to get more cabinet and counter space. Not what i wanted to spend $5k on but we have to make an improvement before the baby comes. Anyone know a good cabinet company? I am waiting on a bid from my cabinet company from work.

In addition we will be ripping out all of the furr downs/soffits. They are above the kitchen cabs, and in both bathrooms. Redoing thr master bathroom, granite tops throughout, and a more modern paint scheme.

Id just tack up 2 scrap pieces and see how it looks. It looks like a 1 " drop. I think if you keep all the crown at the same angle, it will look fine.

I think we may be talking about two different issues.

I hadn't planned on wrapping the crown into the breakfast nook. The issue I have is where the vault comes down and ties into that corner. On the nack side I am left with a big gap and the crown hangs below the ceiling line on the kitchen/nook side.
