What is the best way to get rid of popcorn ceiling texture? We are starting to repaint the inside of our house and I want to add some crown molding. I figure I should start doing away with this crap as I go. 5" baseboards and crown molding lose their appeal when you see the ceiling texture!

Get a pretty wide putty knife or some kind of texture scrapper

Spray bottle with hot water and spray it down. 10 or so min and get to scrapping. Will eventually come off in big chunks. Small putty for edges

Get a scraper that is on a pole or that can be attached to a pole, it will make it a ton easier.

Mud knife on a broom stick and a spray bottle. And lots of painters plastic or drop cloths

The only catch to the "spray it down and scrape" method is when the previous owner fucking paints the ceilings with a latex paint Ask me how I know. Goddamn fucking peasants.

Damn didn't even think about that. What did it take to get removed?

We've left ours alone, simply because it's a lot of work and a huge mess. Well let the next owners deal with removing it.

It really doesn't look that bad when everything else is updated, and it's not painted bright white.

                    Ours is flat white.

We have furr down headers over our bathroom vainities and the kitchen cabinets. We were planning to pull these out when we redo our cabinets. I would hate to go through that work and leave the popcorn.

I used a tile scrapper. I heated it with a torch and bent an angle that kept the right pitch between the tool and ceiling. It has a wide diameter, and after a couple of water treatments the popcorn fell off rather easily.

This is my thinking too and I've got it all over my house. I understand why people want to get rid of it, and back in the day it was a cheap, quick method for covering up any problems when the drywall was done.

One advantage of popcorn that is often overlooked is that it helps cut down on interior sound transmission in your home, so it helps when you're trying to sleep in on Saturday and the kids are being noisy in the morning.

Once it's been painted, it loses that.

                              I used a garden sprayer

and started with the cheap specialty scraper that holds a trash bag... But soon resorted to a wide drywall/mud knife. Luckily I was replacing the carpet too. I folded all the popcorn into the carpet and threw it away in one shot.
