  • Electric water heater sugg. (storage tank)

Water heater is going on little over 11 years and going to replace here shortly.
Currently have a 60 gallon in the garage on a stand. Looking to replace with another 60 or at minimum 50 gallon. Any particular one you guys might recommend. Looking at Homedepot, they have a few Rheem and couple Marathon(not cheap). Don't plan on moving anytime in near future, so budget would be 1k and below.

    Thanks

My brother and I are both all electric so we went with 85 gal Marathons. No complaints.

I went with a GE hybrid heat pump water heater. It uses something like $250-300 a year less electricity than a traditional. That being said, get the extended warranty. They replaced the evaporator coil on mine but the great thing about them, they have standard heater element backup

I have heard the big box stores carry lower quality than plumbing supply stores. Does anyone know if this is true?

I was kind of thinking the same thing about the big box stores. Pretty sure the plumber stores will have better services/warranty. Guess it will be one of those services that won't work unless you pay them to install it though.

I'll look into the Marathon series. Will need measure where mine sits now since those are shorter but wider. Still open to other opinions though.

it only does one thing, make water hot. in your house you will not ave the load for hot water that a bigger commercial building would have. You will be fine with one from HD

Thanks dick. Did some research and looks like it is best to get one from the plumbing supply stores.

ok, if you were local i would send you to one of my suppliers for a discount but i dont know the lubbock plumbing market. sorry to have sounded like a dick. just saying you typically use hot water for 2-3 hours max per day, right? get one with a good recovery time and you will be fine, just read the yellow tags.

I use Locke Supply, but i have a hookup at Moore Supply up in mckinney. These guys all sell to the public, but I think even they will tell you that you are better off going to home depot.

Double check physical measurements if there is restricted room where it is being installed. My parents house is near dfw and is like 5 or 10 years old. Their water heater went out and dad went to buy a new one and found codes had changed (i do not know if state wide or local). Anyway turns out the same gallon heater under new codes had to be physically larger and theirs was in the attic in a space just large enogh for the old one. He was lucky to find an older model still in stock, but next time he has to either go with a smaller capacity or move the heaters physical location. Like I said not sure if it was a local or state code change, but double check physical size so you don't run into any issues there.

I have two Kenmoore 40gal 'self circulating' that are going on 11 yrs old. I'm concerned on age being that both are in the house and we just got new carpet. I'm looking to replace both is it worth it to spend extra on installation for valves that auto shutoff and leak detectors?

Just make sure the T&P valve is connected and routed outside, and most codes will require a drain pain, that should also be routed outside.

Mine is in the garage. So no worries for room. It is on a stand. I can make room no problem. My valve goes outside. Have drain pan but it does not go outside. That is one thing i would like to do when i get a new one.
