  • Wall mounted TV

So I had an interesting conversation with a home theatre set up company. When I hung my TV on the wall I ran the HDMI cable and the power cable through the cutout box behind the tv down to the cutout for my wires at the bottom by the trim and plugged everything in.

All pretty, but I couldn't pull my tv out but about an inch without it pulling itself out of the tv. I decided to call the pros and ask if it would be fine hooking up an extra tv power cable to extend it and he quickly said no and also said that the power cable shouldn't even be in the wall in the first place and is against code. I had to order this [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Datacomm-45-0023-WH-Recessed-Pro-Power-Straight/dp/B00193QP92/ref=pd_sim_23_9?ie=UTF8&dpID=31WBr9mkWbL&dpSrc=sim s&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0C7XTP81RRGJ BFE4XBHK"]http://www.amazon.com/Datacomm-45-0023-WH-Recessed-Pro-Power-Straight/dp/B00193QP92/ref=pd_sim_23_9?ie=UTF8&dpID=31WBr9mkWbL&dpSrc=sim s&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0C7XTP81RRGJ BFE4XBHK[/ame] for behind the tv and for the bottom and hook it up with some romex and get it all up to code.

just wanted to post about it in case any of yall had ran your cables in the wall like I did.

Should have just used a longer power cable. Also, who's going to inspect it after you do it? Those look and wok great, but I'll save my coin.

True, but he also mentioned that if a fire broke out in my home and even if it wasn't even related to the power cable in the wall the insurance inspector they deny my claim?

I don't know how much that is true or not, but I would rather not take my chances.

While its against code, its nonsense. Instead of doing that, buy some romex and put a new outlet behind the tv.

        3' of 12/2 romex
        old work box
        outlet
        faceplate
        $10?

It's nonsense, and he's just trying to get you (and others) to pay an unnecessary high install price.

This is how I do my installs. Very easy to do with the retrofit boxes.

Yeah I haven't bought the stuff from amazon yet. I was thinking of putting an outlet behind the tv. Would I just run romex to the breaker box with a new breaker?

              Nonsense. Scare tactic. Poor salesperson.

Typically, I hang my TV's on the wall where an existing outlet is already located below. I mark where the TV will go, then determine where I want the outlet behind it, and I try to stay in the same wall cavity as the existing outlet. If it's an interior wall, it's a piece of cake to drop the wire to the existing outlet and piggyback off it. If it's an exterior wall, you can use a piece of chain to get between the insulation and drywall and fish it through. There is no need to home run it back to the breaker when you can jump from a nearby outlet.

x2... hopefully the outlet is just below where you want the tv (or at least behind the tv). Just pray there is no fire blocking in the way. The other way is if you can get above the outlet in an attic, you could cut a wire feeding that room and splice in a junction box and run an extra wire out and down the wall where you need it.

I think this is the way to go! Thanks 8mpg and juice. My outlet is on the other side of the stud where I cut in a box to run my wires down, and that area has 3 fire blocks from the top plate down to the bottom. This sucked when I was running my surround sound wires, hdmi cable and power wire.

I had to eventually buy a long ass bit for this reason.

I have extensions of varying lengths to add to a long 5/8" auger bit for that reason. Another option is to pull the baseboard moulding if you have it and run the wire around the floor. It may mean touch up caulk/paint, but it is easier than fighting blocking.

Well lucky for me, when I ran my cables through the wall after finding out about the 3 fire blocks, I ended up doing 3 pumpkin cuts down wall on the opposite side. The wall is the guest room closet so you cant see anything which is nice and used a spade bit to drill out my holes and run everything down.

That was about 2 years ago and I still haven't patched those damn holes up.. another thing to add to my honey do list..

its against code to move the outlet up or down on the wall.
Its against code to install a new front door without a permit.
Its against code to repair or replace any copper pipe without a permit.

Just 3 of the dumbass codes you have to get a permit to do in fort worth.

All 3 add up to like 12 bucks. Extra taxes that i'm not paying.

Can someone check my poor MS skills and let me know if I have this correct. My TV is coming into today and when I get off work im going to run to lowes and pick up a couple of outlet boxes to nail to the studs in the attic and run my electric wires.

                              Items needed:
                              2 outlet boxes
1 drywall outlet box for the tv plug
                              1 outlet plug
                              romex (already have)

Here is my rough sketch of how it looks in my head lol, while im here on this conference call.
