Posted this several years ago and just wanted to give an update.
I thought my wife was crazy when she said she wanted to paper mache the stairs...i thought she was really crazy! 4 year down the road these stairs still look amazing and i am truly impressed! It was quite a job though!
1. get the carpet out...not so easy with padding underneath. With pliers pulled several hundred staples out ...sheesh
2. sand the stairs down, get all the remaining glue off
3. paint the upward portions and surrounds
4. paper mache the stairs...every other stair so we could still use them so this is x2
5. stain the stairs actualyl did two coats with two different shades
6. polyurethane the stairs...every other one X2
7. dig old hand rail out of creek bed(true story)
8. have rail sand blasted and powder coated
