  • Home theater subwoofer build

Well... I have wanted to do a DIY sub for a long time. AVS forum has great info. Its actually overwhelming the amount of info, line graphs, technical terms, etc. Luckily there are some great people who love to help and others document their builds for people like me who have no clue.

So Im building dual slot ported 18" subs.

    The parts
    (2) Stereo Integrity 18" D4 subs
    Inuke 3000dsp amp
    (2) custom built boxes around the "Marty" platform. This particular one is called the "Johnnysub" based on the dimensions. 25.5"W x 32"H x 24"D

They should tune out to about 18.5hz. About 2200 watts total. 116db at 20hz. It has a very nice flat curve.

I didnt really get pictures of assembling but its pretty easy. These builds are based off simple plywood dimensions to maximize wood. Two boxes uses 3 sheets of MDF. They should weight about 150lbs with the 40lb subs in them.

Tomorrow Im going to close them up, add a little more foam and drill for the subwoofer mounting hardware. Im not sure on the finish (have laminate samples coming in but not sure if it can do a 3/4" radius bend..if not it will be veneered).

Here is a picture of the current SVS PB12-NSD which I though has been good. Everyone that has heard it thinks its loud and shakes the house. The new setup will kill it.

And here is one of the to new subs in comparison (I dont drink DP so Diet Mt Dew can substitute).

wow that is awesome! I have been thinking about doing the same. I need to get a good table saw so that i can start on some wood projects. What model infinity center do you have?

      I am jealous!

I will be building my own enclosure but will be limiting myself (unfortunately) to a single Image Dynamics 8" with about a 300w amp. Very cool build man.

I have a cheap set of Infinity Primus speakers. I have 363s for the front and surround and the pc351 for the center. When DIYSoundGroup opens up orders for their 1099 speakers, I will be building 3 of those for the fronts and center. Im not a huge audiophile but enjoy building stuff. Soldering up crossovers and what not sounds like fun.

Can you take any pics of the amp and care to give us a price that you have in the materials/equipment?

Amp is being delivered today...Looks like this:

              Cost:
              (2) Subs - $358
              amp - $260
              Misc cables - ~$50
              3 sheets of mdf - $108
Total - ~$776 (probably $800 if I just paint the box)

Tools I bought specifically for this:
              Jasper circle jig - $45

About to wire the boxes and put the subs in...then I wait for the amp. The boxes will stay unfinished until I figure out what I want to do. Im more excited about hearing this thing shake the house.

Im about to pick up that center channel. I have the p363s for my fronts and really like the way they sound and need to match them with the center.

Dude those boxes are HUMONGOUS! Dumb question, but how will you wire the subs up? Do you just run a neg and pos inside to the out and then from the out you run a neg and pos to the amp?

Cool build! Are you going to leave it raw or apply a veneer or paint down the road?

If the port tuning frequency is 18.5Hz, output is going to drop off dramatically below that. The nature of a ported sub. Regardless, those subs are going to bring the pain - if his room cooperates.
