  • AV Receivers - needs some help cutting through the BS

Man, seems like every few years I need to upgrade there's even more BS I need to wade through. Denon 5200, 250w per channel my ass. Does any reliable website actually test these receivers to see what they actual can output with 5 or 7 channels? I wish every company would just put the actual output per channel like HK does. Unfortunately it's become evident my Harman Kardon AVR-2600 cannot drive my new speakers. I need a receiver that can reliably drive (5) 100w speakers. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Why not step up to a pre-amp? If I'm not mistaken, the AVR-2600 has the outs.

Dolby Atmos should be on your radar if you're shopping.

Hmm, maybe that's a solution. I really hadn't thought about it. I've been looking into Atmos with some curiosity. Another set of surround speakers to match my rears is going to run another $1,000 and I'm not too thrilled about that. My experience with audio has been more channels does not always equal a better experience. But, I must admit I've never heard an atmos sound system.

At the moment the best looking receiver to me is a Marantz SR7008. I just don't have a whole lot of experience so I'd defer to someone on the board for some better knowledge.

Most consumer off the shelf receivers measure their output with 2 channels driven. Even a $2K Marantz AVR measures 2 channels driven on the spec page. It's just marketing fluff to lure indiscriminate buyers in to buying their product, especially regarding the low end offerings. This is why some people end up getting separate multichannel amps like Outlaw Audio or Emotiva, that measure RMS output all channels driven. Pricy, but you actually get the output that is advertised. Along with cool features like optional balanced inputs.

Audioholics used to bench test AVRs as a part of their review. Try searching for the model you're interested in and see if there is a review. The lab results are usually at the end of the article.

          + 1 on considering Atmos
