  • 1/2 ass shower redo??

whats the worst that could happen if i decided to etch out the grout lines between tiles in my shower, peel up the caulk, then re-grout and re-caulk it? im going to redo the entire shower and bathtub area tile wise and get a new frame-less glass shower enclosure but prolly not any time soon. i figure an afternoon, a tube of caulk and a bag of grout and it will hold me over for a bit.

    god bless.

Your OCD will go into overdrive, and you'll end up re-doing the entire bathroom to the tune of about $20k

thats whats causing this now! water getting behind the old caulk, then molding, then i clean with bleach and a brush further decaying the caulk turning into more mold and on and on and on..... i was cleaning it a 3am today!

Pretty much, at least how our current house went when we moved in 3 years ago.

Sounds like you'll spend as much time doing that as you would just knocking it all out and puting up new cementboard and tile, you can always get to the door/frame deal later.

I started a bathroom "remodel" with just a new toilet and faucet and some peel-n-stick vinyl tiles, now 3 months later i have ripped out all the old sheetrock because i couldnt get the wallpaper to come off right. i finally got it all taped and bedded last night, and hope to start on tile this weekend. it's taken way too long but i really only get to work on it like 6 hours a week.

I also raised the shower head up a foot so a normal sized person can actually stand under it, along with a new tub

As long as you re-grout, seal, and caulk properly, it can only help.

What people are getting at is that the level of effort to do all that (mainly, getting the old grout out) puts you in a category where it may be just as time consuming as just busting the tile out and redoing it. It will cost a little more but the time savings in demo will offset the time of redoing the whole thing.

if you've got water seeping through old grout and caulk you might as well rip it all apart to see what other issues are hidden.

A dremel has no business doing anything other than hobby stuff.

You're going to spend the next two months of your free time messing with that shit.

Rip it out and do it right

Yeah, I could even see using it if you just needed to replace a couple of individual tiles (due to cracking or such) but I think Paul is underestimating the effort of using something like that for the entire shower. Especially if the current tiles are on the smaller size.

For a quick change in look and to help seal it up. If you have anothe shower. Use it for a few days.
Remove the old caulk and clean with a good silicone remover.
Use a grout stain/sealer and stain the grout your desired color. (Be sure to test a small area that isn't immediately visible to make sure you are happy with it.)
Use a silicone grout caulk that matches your grout color. Make sure it is silicone. Do not use latex! Caulk where the tub meets the tile, as well as the vertical corners where the tile comes together.
