Late winter to spring mowing

I noticed alot of people are out mowing right now. Most of what I see being mowed is yards full of weeds. My yard is about 95% bermuda and is still dormant but I thought I read or heard its best to cut the grass around this time and to cut it short.

Should I be cutting it now?

yeah, i dont have the science behind it but i always scalp my lawn this time of year before it starts growing

Do you really "scalp" it like I have heard?

I put my bermuda lawns down to the lowest setting on my bermuda lawns , the idea is to get the grass to stand back up like when you get your hair cut to a bur , then let it slowly grow out throught the year, we do this over two mowings going different directions each time . For st augustine i try and get down to a max of 1 3/4 or 2" then again let grow slowly throught the year , usually raising the mower one notch every 4-6 weeks depending on growth , and my one notch means raising either the front or back on a push mower not both at the same time , I usually can get lawns down to 2\3 which is notch 2 on front wheels and 3rd notch on back then start mowing regularly on 3/3 which is about one quarter inch higher than scalp height then move to 3/4 then 4/4 and so on , this is on toro commercial but the idea is the same across the board , most riders are raised in quarter inch increments already.
