  • Smart TV and DirecTv ?'s

Got a new Samsung smart TV that has a built in DirecTv receiver. Unfortunately my Yamaha 7.2 receiver is sorta old (maybe 6 years old) so it has no optical input for sound. Watching something on Netflix I have to use the TV speakers, not my surround sound system.

Currently I have everything going thru the Yamaha so the only cable the TV has plugged in is the HDMI out from the Yamaha.

    Here is my dilemma...

If I plug the DirecTv directly to the new TV, there is an optical audio out on the TV, but no optical audio in on my Yamaha receiver, so basically I have no sound to my surround sound system.
What would be gained by doing this however? Would it have a better picture??? Hard to believe, it is pretty damn good. Watched some 3D Netflix last night and some 4K HD stuff too, amazing pictures!

Currently I have to switch to HDMI1 for TV, but the sound is great.
    Netflix sound sucks in comparison...

I could buy a new receiver, but holy fuckballs, a good one aint cheap!

If I do go with a new receiver, any recommendations on one? It would also need to support 2 outdoor speakers, along with the 7 ceiling mounted and sub I have. I see a decent Yamaha for $550 at Best Buy

    Yamaha - 875W 7.2-Ch. Network-Ready 4K Ultra HD and 3D Pass-Through A/V Home Theater Receiver

Being a cheap-ass tho, I am thinking of NOT connecting DirecTv to the Samsung smart TV, and just keep the receiver in place. Pros/cons please!???

Go to traders village for a new receiver. It may say Sany, but it has Sony guts, so no problem.

I could be wrong but I bet someone makes a cheap optical to x (your audio input type) adapter.

I don't even see an audio in on the receiver. There seems to be only component ones, like CD, DVD, etc. Nothing labeled just audio. Of course, there are so many fucken wires back there, I may be missing one! Looking for the manual online now

May be in luck! PDF for the receiver says this:

            AUDIO jacks

            DIGITAL COAXIAL jacks
For digital audio signals transmitted via coaxial digital audio cables.

            DIGITAL OPTICAL jacks
For digital audio signals transmitted via optical digital audio cables.
You can use the digital jacks to input PCM, Dolby Digital and
DTS bitstreams. When you connect components to both the
COAXIAL and OPTICAL jacks, priority is given to the signals
input at the COAXIAL jack. Optical input jacks are compatible
with digital signals with up to 96 kHz of sampling frequency.

And the TV PDF says this:
            Digital Audio (Optical) Connection
Connecting an AV receiver to the TV via a digital audio (optical) connector lets you listen to digital
            audio.
