Hot water heater is all of 15' from the panel....what gauge?

I have a Stiebel Eltron Tempra series heater for the entire house. Yes, you'll need a panel that can support the amp draw. I don't know what you have in your house and I don't know if you can accurately obtain the information needed to find out if what you currently use can support it. I will say that I have a 200A service panel and my heater has 3 60A dedicated circuits and everything runs just fine with a 5 ton a/c unit for the house, electric wall oven and cooktop. Keep in mind I was able to determine a figure of how much load was being drawn before I bought the heater.

As for performance from the heater itself, no issues at all. A lot of people who have tankless will tell you that electric is a waste or inadequate compared to gas fired tankless, but it isn't true assuming you size it correctly and your panel can support it. The only real maintenance I perform on it is once a year I run vinegar through the heater to descale it.
