  • Has anyone had windows replaced in their house?

I'm looking at getting all the windows in my house replaced, but have no idea on normal pricing or things to watch our for, services to buy or not buy, etc. Most of the windows in my house are from 1985, wood frame with a single pane of glass, all of them double hung. I don't really feel like double hung is necessary, we never lower the top sash on them as it is. I think i want gas filled and double paned, but don't know much about windows so if someone knows of better products please let me know.

and lastly, what should i expect to pay per window for R&R + new window? I don't believe any special accommodations will be necessary when installing the new ones (not changing sizes, etc). The house has vinyl siding if that makes any difference. I have a guy coming out on Monday to give me a quote on windows and install, but want to know what to expect ahead of time.

We have something like 23 windows in the house so i feel like it's going to be expensive no matter what

I replaced my own windows and it wasnt too expensive. My average window was about $200 each. That being said, some were $150ish a window and two were about $250 a window. Labor to install usually runs $200/window or so. We went with some Simonton double hung reflections 5050 windows. They are efficient SHGC .20 and ufactor was.22 or something like that.

You will definitely want double pane windows with some type of gas fill. I wouldnt get any windows more than a .25 shgc. This is the percentage of heat it lets in.

Get ready to be overwhelmed with bullshit and sales tactics. Take your time and look over the bids and research online. There are lots of manufacturers out there and they make some low end stuff and high end stuff. Wood windows are going to be fairly expensive... I would just replace them with vinyl

I paid 3600 for new windows and solar screens I think. 10 windows and on my house they had to break the frames out of the wall because they were bricked in. I got some kind of high efficiency sliding and tilting windows. They only tilt to clean though and they are vinyl. Made a big difference in sound and my AC cuts off faster now. I actually got two quotes and they were within a couple of hundred dollars of each other. I do know they only use top of the line windows at both places also and they only come in white now. I used Renfro Glass in Lancaster and they had them special ordered due to size.

          Cool, thanks Tim and Jason.

Clayton, I have hung windows before during a replacement (always single units, never a house), it's not horribly difficult work but half of mine are up on the second story and it would take me a week or two of evenings to get them all done. Plus i don't have anyone here who would be able to help. I'd rather pay for labor and get a warranty on the work than suffer from a learning curve at my own expense.

Mine was a whole different ballgame..a standard replacement should be easier.

All windows are special order. There are not really standard sizes unless you are buying off the shelf windows.

There's standard sizes and custom sized widows.

I recently had Precision Windows replace 17 leaky fogged up windows in my house. It was $1,020.00 with a lifetime warranty. They came out with a huge crew and they had it done in less than 2hrs.

When I tried pricing the individual windows myself it was about $100-300 per. It is substantially cheaper to pay a window company to do it for you.

That's an average of $60 a window with installation. That doesn't sound possible?

Wait, did they just replace the glass, or the entire window? I assume Kyle is talking complete replacement.

Glass, 5/8" vinyl bars, & recaulk. After checking the receipt I was a little off. $1,080, not $1,020.

That makes sense. Still sounds like a good deal. I wish we didn't need complete replacements (original crap windows from 1961).

Sorry about your bad luck, but my buddy owns American Windows and I get to pick his brain Often. Hell, I was at his plant watching them churn out 400 a day.
