  • Want to add a shed out back - put it up against house or no?

I'm wanting to add a storage shed out back and am wondering if I should have it attached to the house or not. I would like to put it in the area right behind the 3rd bay of the garage in the side yard. That wall is about 10 ft wide so if I attached it to the house, I could go the full 10 ft for the width and however deep I want it. On the other hand, I could leave some room between the shed and house by just making it 8 ft. wide and make it a little deeper to compensate.

I'm not sure which would be the best way to tackle this.

Here is a rough sketch of the house to give a better idea of what I'm wanting to do. The red box is where I'd like to put the shed.

I did exactly that in Plano when I lived there. HOA snitched to city and I had to move the shed. Be aware of your local rules.

Which is why maybe attaching it would be better. More of an addition with permits...etc...etc

This all assumes you live in a standard hood. That shed move cost me over 1000 to build a retaining wall and hire a company to move it.

You really need to check the codes in your area first. To be that close to your home it'd really be considered as part of it and needs to meet the same building standards. You might as well get a permit and build an addition.

As noted, you'll probably end up needing to move it. Or if you do build it and people don't complain you still could have problems in the future due to storm damage. Sheds move around and blow apart, being that close to the house it could damage the main building and your insurance would have a problem with that.

Check local code before doing anything. There are likely restrictions how close it can be to the main structure or property lines. Also, if you exceed a certain square footage you need a permit. When I lived it Little Elm the limit was 120 square feet without a permit.

I'm assuming the right side is the front of the house/street facing? I have a similar setup, 6 foot Tuff Shed installed behind the 3rd garage bay, but further back. It is up against the house (maybe 3 inches apart), but can not be seen from the street.

Like they said...if you attach it, you will probably need a permit and inspection. Way too much of a hassle for a shed.
