  • my $65.00 backsplash

So. I've been wanting to upgrade our kitchen from all of the contractor grade stuff it had when we bought it. We were at Lowe's the other day looking at glass tile and stainless steel tile for our backsplash and ran across a 'stick-on' tile that looked super easy to work with and without all of the other crap that comes along with installing tile (grout, tools, mastic, wet saw, etc., etc.) is pretty affordable at $9.99sqft. Our backsplash is around 30sqft. After talking to the Lowe's guy I decided I didn't want to fuck with all that crap so I asked about the stick on stainless steel stuff. He said he hasn't had any returns so of course I Google reviews and they are surprisingly good. Only problem is this particular Lowe's only had 2sqft in stock. I pulled up the Lowe's app on my phone and saw:

    Fuck yes!
Now we just needed to find it. The guy called the Richardson location and they had 54 in stock. Off to Richardson. We get there and it shows $9.99 on the shelf, but has a ton. I show him the price on my phone and he matches it without hesitation and without me asking. Anyway, 30sqft@$2.00/ea is a STEAL, I was excited.

It's pretty easy to deal with and I stuck it right over the existing tile. It worked great. I'm still needing some new outlets and covers, but that's easy enough, I just haven't gotten around to it. You'll also notice that the cabinets are two different colors, obviously. We did the bottom cabinets with a Rustoleum Transformations kit, and haven't got around to doing the uppers yet. The tile on the backsplash is the exact same as what's on the floor in there, I hated it.

    Various pics:

Not bad for a total of $65 and about 3 hours of my time.

I think glass would look better, but for $65 that looks pretty darn good.

Lowes seems to be pretty good about screwing up prices. When I bought my fridge they were having a sale at 30% or something like that. Get to the register and it isn't ringing up, after they go back and forth trying to fix it, they end up giving me 30% off the sale price instead of the original. I just said that price is good with me and went on my way.

We originally were leaning with glass tile, and I agree that it would look better. We also had to consider the wall color and finding a glass tile that would work with it, not that it's impossible, but the green we used on the walls is tough to match. I also think it will look much better once we do the uppers dark.

          It looks good.

On a side note, that's a heavy duty looking faucet. You don't worry about water spraying on those monitors on the other side of the wall?

Not really, the water sprays down. I'm not even sure I could get them without unless I was trying.

I saw that stuff when we redid our kitchen. My main concern was that it seemed like a pretty new product and I questioned the longevity of the adhesive. We went with glass tile with an accent strip....I am sure yours was MUCH easier! It was definitely a hell of a lot cheaper!

Looks good. Are you planning on staining/painting you upper cabinets too? Once you do that and replace with SS appliances it will look very nice.

Eventually. I'm too lazy. It's easy but very time consuming. SS appliances will be a while, but that's the plan.

Why is the spacing weird? The patterns are so random...

In pic#1 the pattern doesn't appear the same on the left vs. the right. Also pic#4 between the electrical sockets, it doesn't line up right. Or maybe it's just the pics.

If it were mine, I think I would have done it more like a subway tile pattern rather than individual squares.
