  • Troubleshooting home A/C - Need Freon

I was testing an A/C unit that hasn't been used for 4 years that I know of, and likely it's been 6 or more years since it was used. I turned it on and gave it a few minutes, but it wan't pushing cold air. A temperature gun showed no drop in temps at the vents.

It only has 1 big filter, so I pulled it out. No change in temps.

I did some trouble shooting of the outside unit. There was no blockage of the vents. The fan comes on and I can hear the compressor hum. I check the capacitor and it's not swollen.

The lower pipe of the compressor gets hot, but none of the other pipes get cold. No sweating observed.

Looks like it could use a pressure/leakdown test and a freon charge.

Anyone have the hookup for this?

More troubleshooting has revealed that both Schraders are holding pressure in the system.

It wasn't like the pressure of a full tire, but there was pressure.

and seems that the compressor was compressing, because the lower line was getting hot.

The property was a forclosure and was winterized while owned by the bank.
Does winterization also include exacuating the freon?

In any event, my guess is that it needs freon to start cooling. Anyone else concur?
Or should I be looking at something else that would cause problems with cooling?
