  • Concrete pricing question

    I'm building a pergola out back and need the foundation poured. From doing a search on here, normal concrete prices vary from $4-5/sf or there abouts. The area I need poured is roughly 400sf and the first quote I got was $3000, which works out to $7.50/sf. I told him that I thought prices were generally $4-5/sf and he said he was giving me the labor at $4.25/sf but that the actual cost of the concrete, rebar, form boards, etc is not included in that rate.

    Is this legit or is this guy ripping me off? I thought the $4-5/sf rate was materials and labor.

        400 sq ft, depending on the depth of the forms, is going to be 16-20 yds of concrete, which on the low end is going to run you $1600-2000 depending on the price your guy can get on concrete. We buy it at $82-85/yd though, we typically pour 1000+ yds per week company wide.

          I'd like to add, you can do much better than that. I believe I paid 1500 total to have a step down from my original covered patio and another 20x20 or more extended from the step. They also stained the concrete and gave the steps and original patio a tiled look with stain. It's been 5 years now and the stain still looks great however, I do have some cracks running through it now that may be an issue years down the road. Fortunately, the stain was done in a manner to give it the weathered stone look and it all blends together hiding the cracks. Hind sight, I think I would have coughed up more cash to a brick and mortar store that could have offered up a warranty vs a contractor I randomly picked

            $1600-$2000 total or materials alone?

            This slab isn't going to hold anything super heavy, so I figured 4" depth would be more than enough.

              Just in material. A 4" slab will be a little less. The last jacuzzi pad I poured was 6" with a perimeter beam and 150 sq ft and it took about 8 yards

                Your math is way off man... 20x20x4" is ~5 yards

                  I didn't work the math. I just ballparked it based on the last small pad I poured. I wasn't thinking at the time that it was done on 6" forms with an exterior beam.

                    My math must suck... i come up with 14.81
                    400x12 = 4800 x 4" = 19,200 / 144 =133 / 9 = 14.81 ?

                      4.94 yards

                      I verified it.

                      here you go gents.

                        So just to confirm, the $4-5/sf is material and labor combined?

                        Using the calculator posted above, 400sf is 222 80lb bags. At retail price of $3.65/bag, total cost of concrete would be $810. That's full retail price at a big box store.

                            133/27. 3x3x3 for cubic feet. You divided cubic feet by sq yds

                              $4.50-5.00/sqft for labor AND concrete is a fair price. $7.50 is just bending you over.
