  • Exhaust fan for the garage

Has anyone installed a exhaust fan in the garage to help remove the heat from parking two hot cars in it? My garage faces west Ive already insulated the garage door and the west wall of the attic.

You park cars in your garage? Why would you do that? Lol, in al seriousness I have a window unit plumed into the hot water heater cabinet and intalled a small exhaust fan in the heat riser. Works pretty well for a ghetto rig lol.

yeah they barely fit in there, I have to bake my truck in so I can get out of it. Im not really looking to air condition the garage just cool it back down after we both get home, it gets hot in there and stays that way.

I have a big exhaust fan that you can have. It is brand new left over from a job. I will get the cfm on it and a model number when I get in this evening.

                      Venting a hot garage

If you have a pull down stairway to the attic over the garage, pull it down about a foot so the hot air will rise through the opening and vent out through the ridge vent or soffet vents. If you only have a scuttle hole, either leave it open, or better yet, make a frame with screen (keeps birds out) and replace the door with the screen. Not as good as an exhaust fan, but it does help. Also, leave the garage door up about 3 inches to cause a draft.

Will try pulling the stairs down and building code down here requires two vents in the garage so maybe that will help create a draft

                          +1.

I keep my garage cracked and my attic cracked and it creates a nice air flow through the garage, and reduces garage and attic temps. I measured the attic temp with it open like that at it was 100* in the attic on a 90* day. I closed it for 30 min and took the temp again and it was 127* in the attic. It went up almost 30* in 30 min with the attic door shut vs open. It would work even better if you installed a solar powered exhaust fan in the attic and left the attic ladder door and garage door cracked.

We had 16 more soffet vents cut in to the eves, and two big solar vents installed to replace smaller non-fan vents. That made a huge difference. If opening your attic access from the garage cools the attic down, you simply need more soffet vents.

If you cut in vents and you are worried about insulation covering them up, they sell flutes (if that is the right word) that help keep the insulation out of them and direct the air up towards the peak.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

yeah, i know, but cracking the attic/ garage was easier and cheaper. lol.
