  • Items to think about buying for first house

So, as some of you know, i closed on my first house today. I am working on getting things settled for the new house and coming up with a list as an apartment dweller, things I need for a house where I wouldnt need them for an apartment. I know im not the first one here to make this transition who has realized all the crap that they dont think about needing that they end up having to buy in a rush.

Things I have picked up so far , and without a doubt an incomplete list :

House Features that already make life a bit easier-
    Programmable Thermostat
New Roof put on with additional venting
    New Hardwood floors in Kitchen
    Sprinkler System
    Small Claffey Built Pool
    LED Lighting on dimmers

Misc things i have already picked up or have-

    Extra Lightbulbs
Toolbox with tools (mostly automotive or general)
    Pool Net and Brush
    Chlorine
    Garage Fridge
    Leafblower/outdoor vac (electric plug in)
    Weedkiller
    Garden Hoses
    Lawnmower
    Weedwacker

I like having an extra big trash can for the garage for non typical stuff or yardwork. You'll want to get a rake, hoe, leaf rake whatever the technical term is, shovel, good gloves, find out what size air filter your AC takes and check it, a vise, some varying length extension cords, a hammer with some misc nails and screws... That's all I can think of off the top of my head. There is plenty more. It never ends.

      Agreed. It never ends.

      I have :
Quite a few hammers and various nails and fasteners,
Good mechanics gloves (need some gardening gloves, but those will work in a pinch)
      Extension Cords
Big ass trash can for the garage trash. Will get a second one to keep by pool equipment specifically for yardwork/pool organic crap

      I need -
      More extension cords
      AC Air Filters
      A rake

Fertilizer, spreader, wheel barrow, get some talstar p and a pressure sprayer so you can feat for insects in/out on your own, no kink water hoses, auto rewind hose reels, patio furniture(buy up, buy once), grill, utensils, and a good cover, fire ant killer, gas powered blower, rechargeable hedge trimmers, Costco has some badass led night lights that even work during power failure and they don't require hard wiring, good vacuum and steam mop, security cameras, glass storm doors, the list is endless.

All good advice. Really the best thing you can do is walk every aisle at Home Depot and familiarize yourself with everything, and grab 1 of everything you think you might need. You'll drop about $500, but you won't be making a trip there two or three times a week for the next 6 months.

Get a shed to keep all that stuff in or it will take up 1/2 your garage.

Flooding and fires are typically the fastest things that will distroy a home. I would grab a couple of fire extinguishers, I keep one in the kitchen and one in the garage. Next you'll want to get to know your plumbing. Buy or make a water shutoff key and make sure you know the location of the water supply shut off valve. It's usually integrated into the water meter body. Find out what brand of faucets and toilets you have and buy a couple of rebuild kits. That shit never breaks at a convenient time.

If you have an Ace hardware store near you take the time to shop there instead of Lowes or Home Depot. Ace always seems to have more knowledgeable people and they tend to keep things in stock that you won't find at the larger stores. If you don't have a ladder, get one because you will be using it.

Get a good wet vac. You won't use it much but really good to have when there is a water leak.

I am hoping with proper garage organization I can get away with some, but yeah, very good advice. My uncle is a king of garage space utilization so I am going to heavily involve him in figuring out what to do
