Holy shit.. not mad at 490?! I don't know what I would do if a 500 dollar power bill showed up. I feel bad for even bitching about mine nowbl after seeing what some of y'all are paying.

Are those of you with large bills running multiple zone systems?

I won't say I was excited about it, but we were also overworking our heat pump and had a few things working against us. House was built in 1985, exterior unit is 20 years old, unit in the attic is original, it was exceptionally cold in December, especially at night, wife and kid are home all day, every day, and we were running the thermostat too high to efficiently run the heat pump relative to how cold it was outside.

So, all things considered, not too bad comparing to 95DRGT who's house is the same size as mine and lives just down the street. My wife saw December's projected bill, flipped her shit and then did some research on how heat pumps work so we could work to lower our bill. It's working and it turns out January is actually projected less than $400 with the warm week we are about to have.

When it was 100+ during the summer, we didn't see a bill over $250.

Jimmy.. you need to look into replacing the system. My system that was just replaced was working but 20 years old. It was an 8 seer. I think Don said anything before '93 or so was 8 seer standard. The new system is 15 seer and should cut my bills in half for heating and cooling. I put in a 3 ton and I think Don said he could do it for close to $4k but we reducted, moved our a/c, etc.

I don't have a problem with my HP, 2600sqft two story, highest bill in the two years we have been here was $150. I keep it at 72 year round.

The most put bill ever runs is around $160 and that is middle of the summer, during the winter we pay around $110-120. We have about 1500 sqft single story built in 2006. We are forced to use coserv though at I think 11.9. Summer ac runs on 76-77 winter it's 71-72

Who is Don? I would be interested in a quote, but have been holding off until the "had to" moment.

I'm in the same boat as yours on years on the unit and set up.

Jimmy- if you get someone to come out and quote send them my way. I've been waiting for it take a crap before I did anything but know I'm on borrowed time

Now add the electricity part too.

That can depend on many things. Most of the houses in this area have heat pumps due to no gas hookups. It can come down to whether or not the heat pump can legitimately support the square footage of the house, how old it is and if the house is sufficiently insulated. It was in the single digits here a few weeks ago and my heat pump did just fine keeping up at 68* during the nights. When the t-stat was kicked up to 71* both electric and heat engaged, but it took less than 30min to get it up to temp. Since buying my house I've replaced the HVAC with a heat pump system with a BTU rate higher than the original and added 4" of recycled newspaper insulation (original insulation was maybe 3" thick) and it has made a world of difference.

My bad the 62.00 was the electric and that's a 1900 sq foot with pool still running and a decent size pond with waterfall. I did just put in a ultra efficient pump on the pool and fountain. I also added new windows last month. Gas bill was 47.00.

Well, Donnie is JunkRacing on the board. His dad and him work together. His dad is Don. Their company is H&H Heating and Air. They have done work for lots of board members here.

Mine needed a new defrost board. That board also damaged the contactor. The previous guy replaced the contactor a week prior because it showed signs of damage but we've been on Emergency Heat since and the new one was already showing signs of getting too hot, so the new guy swapped it out when he put in the new board. Ship-shape for a week now. I won't be needing a new unit after all, for a while at least.

Ever since I've had gas heat I'll never go back to electric for heating purposes. My next door neighbor is on all electric and his damn heat pump is running constantly, literally for several hours in this weather. Now he may have problems with the system, who knows, but my furnace kicks on, the entire house can be warmed up 5 degrees in about 30 minutes.

On top of that gas prices seem to be a little cheaper this year.
