  • Adios Wood Paneling

Decided to take down all the wood paneling and have the sheetrock behind it repaired, floated, taped, mudded, textured and painted before new flooring gets put in in a few weeks.

This is the new flooring going in.

This is what it looked like before we bought the house

And now with all the paneling gone.

I would have painted the wood panels white. Just my .02.

Also, she is doing it wrong. A bikini is required while vacuuming.

looks like a good start! With all that work being done, I'd go ahead and scrape off the ceiling popcorn and texture it too.

My dad had a remodeling business when i was in high school and college, we would get calls all the time to remove paneling. He had pictures of some houses that we had done where we painted the panneling, and it looks a bit classier and less run of the mill than textured walls. Plus it was cheaper.

That was my thought process. We were looking at an older home that had the same paneling and I thought it would look classy painted white and much cheaper since the paneling was already there.

There are people out there paying good money to have that paneling put in painted white.

i've had painted wood paneling before, while you think it might be classy, it's not.

wainscoting as a treatment on part of the walls or in certain areas, definitely looks nice painted. But entire rooms of paneling painted, still screams outdated.

I thought about taking down the popcorn ceilings, but the whole house has them, and I really don't want to just have one or two rooms without it. I'd rather it be all or nothing. At this point I'm not doing the whole house.

Hopefully you're getting a better deal than $18.18/sqft on those beautiful floors....

Been there done that. What a pain in the ass. I did smooth walls and rounded edges (ceiling included) it looks good but was a huuuuuge pain in the ass.

Also makes it a PIA to change colors in a room...no edge.

do not use sheet rock tape! you have so many damn lines and gaps it's going to take you forever just filling and sanding

I'm having the walls covered in cowskin after the painting is done.

Have you priced synthetic cowskin? It's cheaper and smells the same.
