In case folks haven't figured it out, they also go bad rather quickly and need replacement. What a racket.
Yep. We can't have our electrician put regular breakers in, that poses a liability for us. We tell the homeowners that they are more than welcome to change them out. No doubt every tine we end up just replacing it with a new gfci

so these new houses with GFCI's in the bedrooms, are they wired any differently when using a GFCI or are they just adding a GFCI outlet where a normal outlet would be? If I see this when we move, I'll probably do the same if it poses no issues.

The resetable outlets are only in wet areas. The other areas that require GFCI (arc fault) such as bedrooms will have a GFCI breaker. When it trips you have to go to the breaker box and reset the GFCI

I have my outside freezer on a GFCI outlet. I have to reset it more often than I think I ever should. I never had a problem with it at my previous house. Now the GFCI flips off and I have to go and reset it maybe once a month.

DUnno if thats because its an old freezer, or the outlet.

Because the motor arcs on startup and it senses a short.

Even a new unit may be too much for the GCFI. It's drawing too many amps when the compressoer kicks on, I'd imagine.

This is most likely the case. Is it on a dedicated plug/circuit? If so, just change the breaker. Saves the worry of all of your frozen items melting.

A GFCI and anything with a motor is a bad combination. (IMO)...especially something that is important to keep running. Personally, I would change that particular receptacle to a standard duplex receptacle. Motors, especially older ones, tend to have some current leakage...a gfci basically just tests the current in (through the hot wire) and out (through the neutral wire), and if there is a difference of 5ma or more, it thinks that there is a ground fault. It's a great safety device because it takes about 8ma to kill a person, if I remember correctly, but they can be a nuisance in situations like this.
