  • Fall/Winter Maintenance

So I think I've done pretty good in my yard through summer and keeping everything healthy. Now I'm looking or suggestions for maintenance to get through fall/winter so the grass comes back next year.

Do I water it in winter like once a month? Fertilizer? Anything?

You need weed and feed/pre-emergent. Problem is, you need different types for each of those grasses.

Follow the Scott's bag for times.

          So fertilize, check.

Do I still need to water on occasion?

I don't mess with mine during the winter as I don't like to mow in 20 degree weather. I will fertilize with a weed n feed first thing in march then begin to water once or twice a week after that. My yard stays nice and green with no weeds. Then usually around the end info April I will apply Scott's max green and continue to water. Here is how my yard stays most of the year.

you dont have to use a different pre-emergent for the mix. but always look at the directions because some can be harmful to st. aug.., a stand alone pre emergent that works well is 0-0-7 with pendulum or pendimethilum dont recall which one they use, not sure of store brand winterizer with pre so i wont say whats out there, im sure a winterizer alone is availble from scotts though......apply soon if possible....i try to make sure the grass receives some water atleast every 14days in winter, be it rain or irrigation, grass can dessicate and die with a hard freeze just as easy in winter as letting it dry out in summer

weed and feed is not the same as a pre emergent, weed and feed is fertilizing plus post emergent weed control
