  • Best way to remove/cover wallpaper

A house we're potentially putting an offer in for has wallpaper in both bathrooms. Obviously this will be one of the first things we get rid of so I wanted some opinions on the best way to do this. I know of 3 options:

    1. Remove the paper, then texture and paint.
    2. Tape/float over the seams, texture over the paper, paint.
    3. Install drywall over the paper, then texture and paint.

I think I'm leaning towards option 2, but I've never actually seen this done. Any opinions?

1 is the best option. its not that hard and it doesn't take that much time. just peel the wallpaper and you can leave the yellow crap left behind by the wall paper. just put mud over it and paint.

I just did this on one of my rentals. If it was a house that I was living in I would personally just take the Sheetrock down and put up new. That will give you the best result and I think I could do it faster than trying to fix the wallpaper.

But, remove loose paper don't attempt to tear it all off. Prime, mud, sand texture.

      Seriously start with new drywall.

This. I've done it half a dozen times through the years and never had any problems. Just get all the proper tools from HD or Lowes, soak the paper, and use a dedicated scraper to scape it off. It isn't nearly as bad or hard as you think.

What's the best method for removing some seriously stuck on wallpaper? I've got a bathroom that has one of those decorative borders up at the ceiling, and I've tried everything short of dynamite to get that stuff off. The roller deal with the spikes on it and some gel type remover did absolutely nothing, even after multiple tries. I ended up shooting texture over it and painting it to match the walls, and then used some 1.5" x 1/2" trim painted in an expresso color to hide the seam. Didn't come out too bad, but it was a PITA. Eventually, I'd like to redo the whole thing and it would suck to have to remove drywall just to get rid of an 8" border.

I've used a steamer to remove it, and it works but for really stuck on paper it will pull the paper banking of the rock too.
