I have a a/c unit in the attic and wonder if the unit has a filter. I replace my wall placed filter every 30 day or less. I have been in this house for 5 month and it has started to get really dusty to wherr we dust 3x a week.

Look for a door on one side of the unit in the attic. There will be a couple of clips holding the door shut if there is one up there. I am assuming since it is in the attic it is hung horizontally?
The units we are installing have 4" filters at the unit only.

depends on how the AC system was designed. If it's more to the center of the house or if the house has a small footprint, one is probably fine and was designed that way. The larger the footprint and I'll be looking for more.
We've been looking at houses and the number of air returns is at the top of my list of "must haves". I'm fed up with the dust. We looked at one house that was built around 2007'ish and it had an air return in EVERY room! But at the least, I'm looking for two large air returns on each side of the house.
If this just started recently, I wonder what the chances of an air duct slipping partially off the air register are? Is the air ducting the old "grey" duct or the shiny "foil" look? The old stuff can dry and split open.

The homes we are building have a return air in every room. From what I understand, it helps maintain temperature in the rooms as well as air circulation, especially if the door is closed to that particular room. We also have fresh air vents on our systems.
