  • Refinishing wood

Got a POS wood table, stripped it, sanded it and painted on some type of primer on it. I just finished staining it but it looks like I might have left some streaks and other imperfections so my question is, how do i get rid of this? Sand paper? More stain? Hopes and dreams?

By primer do you mean like a pre-stain conditioner? (I'm sure you do, but all I can imagine is somebody putting stain on a primer gray table and wondering why it looks bad...)

To answer your question though, you are probably going to want to sand it down (may try some stripper as well) and re-stain. It is unlikely that adding more stain on top will help with streaks.

I did this on a shotgun stock one time, it was my first staining project. I learned my lesson on sanding right the first time. Fixing that was a huge pain in the butt!

Right! Pre-stain conditioner. I guess something around a 200 grit for sanding should suffice?

You didnt sand it well enough, and the old finish is what you are seeing. The only way I know of to fix it is to sand it all the way back down again (or at least that was what my dad made me do when I did that)

I thought I sanded it down pretty well. The streaks I'm seeing are from using too much stain. The texture is also grainy.

Haha I though I sanded that gun stock pretty well too.

I have never heard of the amount of stain you are using making a difference as long as you are consistent and are working with a wet edge. Grainy texture would probably mean either dust on the piece, brush, or in your stain.

I would start with a lower grit (60 or 80) to power through the stained area and then finish with a 220 or so.

Are you using something like polyshades that has the urethane mixed in with it? If so that may be part of the problem. I had similar results with some raw pine trim I stained.

If not, how did you go about applying it? With a brush or rag? Did you apply, let it sit for 10-15 minutes and remove the excess?

are you using a water based stain or oil based?

I used the polyshades 1 step stain. Looking at it again, it looks like it just needs a quick buff to smooth out the grainy parts. After letting it sit for a few hours after the first coat it looks like it all soaked in. I used a brush and now the table has little hairs in it.yay

Same results I ended up with. If you like the tone/shade of the stain, I would recommend sanding smooth and then re coating with a dedicated clear.

I used deft on my console radio and was very pleased with the final results

After letting it dry all night, it came out looking nice. It just feels rough.
