  • Dog fence (electric)

I have a "havahart" electric dog fence that I have used in the past. I took it down because if was an eye sore when I had it ran all around the back yard. Anyway my dog has been digging and tearing up the fence and I am putting up a small section of it. It is a small 110 box that has a power stud and a ground stud, on which you wrap the wire around and secure with a wing nut. The power wire will be the line ran where you need it secured in place with 1/2 inch pvc stakes and cotter pins. The ground wire is just wire ran to a metal stake in the ground. The fence isn't working, (I touched it) and am needing help determining if the box is even working. How can I determine if the box has power?

I don't know much about hot wires but is sounds pretty straight forward. Can you open the box and test the internal connections using a volt meter?

Did you touch both sides of the terminals?

I touched the wire after I had it hooked up. I know the "zap" isn't much of a jolt at all. I did not touch both terminals at the same time. If I was to touch both sides with a screwdriver, should expect a spark?

I doubt anything would happen with a screw driver crossing terminals.

Mine pulses, so I was thinking it was bad too. I grabbed the wire to pull it off and got a zap after a second. If you grab both terminals, and you dont get a shock after a second, you have a bad unit. If you have it all working and grab the wire but dont feel it, take off your shoes and try again.

Yeah I took my shoes off last night because I knew that can prevent a zap. Touching both terminals will only induce a zap similar to touching the wire right? I don't want a troll post resulting in my frying my own dumb ass. Lol

lol yeah it is the same shock as touching the wire in the field.

One of those pen looking deals that lights up and or tones when you get it near power is what I use to check mine.

Wet the ground where your ground wire goes in and where you are standing then touch it. It will get your attention if it is working.

Sounds complicated for a dog fence. Just get one where you bury the wire and put a collar on the dog.

I just did one of these. You have to complete the circuit by going either in front of your house or making a complete lap back around your fence. It was just as much of a pain in the but as electric.

Yeah, did one myself a month ago or so. Pretty big area out of mine and thought it was pretty straight forward and easy.

$10 voltage meter from a hardware store - put a stick on each and see if there is voltage.
