  • Opinions on front load washers

We have pair of front load LG's, and the washer is clearly eating its own bearings. It's ugly, and I have to replace it ASAP. My appliance repair guy said the rear bearings were $250 for the part, and it might have damaged some other $200 part as well, and with his $100 hourly, he said to just go find a replacement.

Do any front load washers not have problems with either mildew or bearings?

Mildew has been a constant problem since we've gotten these- I use a 1/4 cup of Arm & Hammer w/ each wash, leave the door open after every wash, but still the mildew.

Never had this problem with my top loaders.

My grandmother and aunt both had front loaders and both had a ton of problems, but I do not remember what brand. They switched back to top load washers.

I had some GE front loaders, nothing but issues too. I'm back to some Whirlpool top loaders.

LG here for about 3 years now with no issues. We had the mildew type issue, cut back even more on the soap and it went away.

I have front load Kenmores I bought in Jan of 07. Had to replace the motherboard on the washer about a week after it went out of warranty to the tune of $300. Aside from that, they have been fine.

I have owned front load LG's for a couple of years now and they work great... The door is always open when a cycle is not running.

My wife has a set of Samsung's front load W&D. She keeps the door open to the washer when not in use...........if she knows what is good for her. It helps to run the clean packets through them on a routinely basis and also clean the folds in the seals every now and then.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

I've heard nothing but issue's with front loaders. I have had my Whirlpool top loader since 99'. I only had to replace the plastic gears(year and half ago), and the lid switch a few months ago. It actually fried. Heck I've had the matching dryer since then too. Not ONE thing has gone bad on it.

While on the subject, are any of the top loaders quiet these days? To me, that's the appeal of a front loader. My washer and dryer make a fuck ton of noise, and they are located in a spot where the noise carries through the house. The noise reduction is the only reason I've been considering front load

Yup, even though they look cool, the people I know that have them always have problems with their units.
I've had three top load washers in 27 years and the first two were clothes slaves, getting used for a family of six almost everyday. The first one lasted about 12 yrs. The second one just went out. I picked one up from a local auction that still had the transparent blue shipping tape on the control panel. $118.00, looks and works like new.

I've got really good hearing, Brent, and I'd say that even my almost 7 year old units are fairly quiet. I imagine they've made huge leaps in that time to be even better.

We used Whirlpool Duet front loaders for 7 years, and no mechanical problems. They do get gunky in the seals and they do cause towels and stuff to stink pretty bad as soon as they get wet again after a wash/dry. We tried all kinds of cleaning methods and it never really fixed the problem for long. Fuck leaving the door open. That would drive me crazy. My next set will probably go back to top loaders.
