Any place local to the metroplex or somewhere online that has great service/prices? I'm not exactly sure what I want right now, but Walnut has the look I'm going for. I'd like to build some lateral cabinets, regular up-right book cabinets, and a simple desk for our study. I may want to do some paneling for the walls/ceiling also. And yes, I know this shit is going to be high anyway you look at it.

Home Depot sells pine that is 3/4 think, planed/jointed, and ready to cut - sand - stain. Not a great furniture wood (too soft), but as far as color goes you could fix it easily with a little stain.Originally posted by jw33 View Post

I don't know of any place to buy walnut, or any wood other than pine (HD), that is in a useable size and finished like you would need it. The Home Depot near my house has some Oak boards and Maple plywood, but that is about it. I found a place online, I'm just leery about buy something like several hundred dollars in larger pieces of Walnut board sight unseen.
Unless someone has had great luck buying it online, I wouldn't mind paying slightly more locally if I knew I could get good pieces of material I can actually put my hands on in person. I plan on adding a decent jointer/planer and a biscuit tool to my collection for this project. My skills are limited, but I've messed around with some wood project here and there. Our latest wood project was some unfinished Oak cabinets we made into a coat/shoe rack for the utility room. I used Oak boards and some veneer pieces from Home Depot and it turned out decent for what it is. It is stained with a Walnut color and has a few coat of clear on it. It has held up great for over a year now.

Try those guys. If you have a planer, you can try Phillips lumber in De Kalb, long ass drive but they have good prices on rough cut lumber. They have a mill, so you can order to your specs.Comment

I bet if you find a place that has some nice cow skin rugs, they'll have the wood you need....

Indeed. I don't know why, but the stretch from Paris to New Boston is one of those roads that I love driving. You see little towns, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, and they survive, thrive and have a community. my dad's ex's (one of them) grandmother lived there, I learned to drive on those back roads up there, from Dekalb to Idabel to Ashdown.
