changing a door frame size

So I ended up getting a much larger safe than my old ones. And, turns out at the new house I need a few more inches so it doesn't overhang. The good news is the interior door is a standard exterior size, 36". I want to change it to a 30" door. I figure I can pickup a new doo and then block the wall and move the door frame in, sounds easy enough. Any advice?

Use shims.

So you're filling in 3" per side (from 2'6" to a 3'0")? If you use a pre-hung door in the jamb, it will be a lot easier. I would stack a 2x4 with a 1X4 on each side then shim it up to flush. You may need some sheetrock, too, unless you find a trim kit for it that will cover those 2x4's you're adding. There's a couple of ways to do it that will work.

I'm sure this will be extremely helpful and all, but prepare for a gigantic fucking mess and for everything to be covered with plaster dust. Had a bigger pocket door installed from the master to the master bath(24 to 28), and it was a disaster.

I had on one of those house hunters shows (my TV defaults to HGTV when I leave it on for some fucking reason) and there was this guy that was obsessed with pocket doors.

Yeah, typically tight bathroom area's. Most "jack-n-jill" set-ups need them so doors aren't overlapping or knocking you off the throne. I've had people forget that they are actually inside the wall and they go about hanging objects using large sheetrock anchors. It's kinda funny when they drill right through the door or hang a large picture then realize their door won't pull shut. LOL!

If he starts tearing out walls to fix them, he will soon lose that obsession. They make different levels of quality in the hardware. Don't penny-pinch on it and it will last a long time.

lol, my contractor told me to be careful about that before I rehung the pictures that were up. 2 of them were bathroom doors.
