  • dalis grass

So what's the best way to fight this stuff. My backyard is starting to get large patches of It. The Bermuda is good, but thr dalis is getting big.

I started spraying it with round up and was thinking i need to pull up the rhizomes and then seed the dirt.

Is that really my only option?

My yard had some patches when we moved in last year. I dug it all out and the St Augustine has filled in the holes nicely.

Yeah, I somehow got cross-contamination in my front yard from my backyard.

Took me a week and 4 trash bags to dig all that crap up, but if you dig it up carefully, roots and all before it sprouts seeds...it does not come back.

        I hate that stuff...

mine got out of control this year.... finally broke down and just sprayed weed/grass killer on the individual spots and about a 5x10 area. I had tried grassy weed and broadleaf killer with no luck.

Broadleaf weed killer will not work on Dalis grass or crab grass. They are not broad leaf weeds, they are grassy weeds.

In doing some research I keep finding the rhizomes don't really die with treatments. You have to pull the Bitches out. That's going to suck. I have 3 or 4 large areas. It's going to be a bitch.

That's what I thought...but after applying a grassy weed/crabgrass killer with no effect at all, I thought I'd try the broadleaf weed killer, which helped with other weeds that I had but did nothing for the dalis grass.

Not to mention, the Scotts weed & feed seems to be feeding them. The last straw was the Round Up, which they're beginning to die off so once that is done, I may till that area up, wait a couple of weeks, and sod it.

if you drive out to a country town weed n feed you can sometimes buy MSMA without a license. That is the ONLY herbicide that will kill dallisgrass. apply when temps are between 80-90 deg and once again in 10 days. make sure you are covered head to toe and wearing safety glasses and a mask and gloves.......that shit doesnt play. its about 80 bucks for 2.5 gals and you mix 2 tablespoons with 2.5 gallons of water......there is a reason its outlawed.....cause it really fucking works

@ 2 tablespoons per 2.5 gallons of water, 2.5 gallons worth of straight msma will last forever

this is what it looks like before its diluted

Ortho ground clear will kill it. Be very careful though. I've just been pulling the grass by hand and a weed puller. Front yard is almost weed free now.

MSMA will not harm Bermuda if applied correctly BTW. Its the only herbicide that will kill dallisgrass. Its regulated to golf courses and sod farms until 12/31/2013

                        for bermuda grass:
                        msma
                        celcius
celcius mixed with revolver for a quick wipeout
image (not sure of how much control)

Anyone have a hookup for MSMA? I'd love to get the backyard under control before MSMA is gone forever.

Just walk into a feed store and try to buy it. The further in the country you are the less hassle you'll get

I just placed an order for MSMA 6.6. Any thoughts on this? It got 2.5 Gal of it and it's recommended dose is 1tsp per 2.5 gal of water.

Secondly, Can I take those hose attached weed n feed sprayers and spread it that way over my bermuda?

                              Thanks!

I bought one of those contamination suits from Cheaper than dirt, that should have me covered quite well for safety.

Also, for anyone that is local:

The EPA Banned this chemical in 2010 but they still make it for sod farms and golf courses. I can still get it. I have 1 jug right now that I just got. Its brand new never opened.
