New Evaporator Coil, New Condensing Unit, reuse the existing furnace, rework the plenum, new pan for the evap coil, adjust the ducting as needed, flush and reuse the lines between the two, etc. Brad's contact Armando is doing the work. Going back with a Bryant like what I had before. The units being replaced were original to the house which was built in 98, so right at 15 years old. I've had a leak in the evap coil for the last couple of years, but just kept adding freon to it. R-22 is really expensive now and the leak is bigger, so it was time to swap it all out. It's a 4-Ton unit, 13-SEER, Puron 410A unit.

Armando and his guys do excellent work...I had them replace an entire system with a carrier 5-ton infinity system, a couple of years ago...every single duct, register, plenum, indoor/outdoor units, thermostat, etc, and it turned out excellent! I've never heard a complaint about him, and with the amount of people I know that have used him, that's saying a lot.Comment

Yeah, that's definitely an improvement. I was lucky when I bought my house. The PO had just installed a brand new AC and Furnace. The AC unit is 15 SEER. My house was built in 1961 and has shit for insulation (original 3 or so inches of loose stuff) and my usage is very reasonable considering it stays set at 72 degrees all summer.Originally posted by Doug Hatton View PostComment

We did this Nov '12. New 5 ton 18 SEER, all new copper lines and new airhandler/furnace and moved the compressor to the shade side of the house. Installed parts and labor for just under $5k. Combined with the 22-26" of insulation in the attic our house stays comfortable at 74*, our electric bill in the summer is sub $150 and it hardly ever comes on and stays on for more than a few minutes.Fuck you. We're going to Costco.Comment

The first (3) pictures are of the old evaporator coil and supply plenum. He pointed out the difference in the design of the coil. The old coil is a horseshoe shape that isn't very efficient. The airflow doesn't move across 100% of the coil due to the weird angles. The new coil has (3) different coils shaped like a Z or a W. Kinda hard to explain and I neglected to get a pic. You can see the oil residue on the old coil and the potential for a leak with all of the connections on it.
Pics 4-5 are the old condensing unit. It still worked, but was on borrowed time.
Pic 6 is inside work. Pic 7 and 8 are outside work.
Pic 9 is the old furnace that we reused.
Pic 10 is the new evaporator coil and new pan.
Pic 11 is the new supply plenum and the new tie ins to the ductwork.
Pic 12 is an overall shot.

He really should have added a return air plenum and some more returns to your system, even if that's an 18" duct it still flows just a little more than half of what's required. Just by looking at the picture I'd say the entire duct system is too small to work correctly.Comment
