New roof is going up...damn is it hot. Im thinking of paying someone to finish it. We did about 70% of it so far. If I had more time off work (and could put in more than 4 hours without feeling like Im going to have a heat stroke) Id be closer to done.

So... here are the pics. its a Mueller R-panel roof. 43sq of materials ordered (about 40 actual squares of roof). I normally wouldnt be doing the roof myself but its an unexpected cost due to the insurance company. $4200 in materials (asphalt shingle installed was close to $10k). Was planning on doing the roof in September/October.

Well the roof is really coming along...its amazing what 3 Messicans can do in a day. I decided it was better to pay someone to finish (we have a deadline with the insurance). All in all the roof was $6200 with $2k in labor. They will be back to finish it in the morning. More pics tomorrow as we got the subfloors out, opened up a load bearing wall and started rewiring the house.. We need to replace all the soffits and the eve trim as soon as the roofers are done.

That's gonna be really loud with softball size hail bouncing off it in a few years!

And insurance doesn't cover cosmetic damage, so when hail beats the hell out of it, you just have a dented up roof.

naa... we are over a single layer of single, 1/2" osb, and will have 6" of spray foam. I have talked to a couple of people with metal roofs and they say it isnt bad at all. I have never seen that big of hail. I have lived in the DFW area my whole life and the biggest hail I have seen is golf ball size.

Baron.. Im not worried about hail. Tons of people have metal roofs that dont get that dented up. Its 24ga steel (some companies use 29ga). And some companies will cover it....but you will pay a higher premium. Most will make you sign a waiver for cosmetic damage or pay the higher premium.

I've been in a house while it got pounded with softball size hail in the early 90s. Mother Nature can be a real bitch in North Texas when she feels like it. I think every house on our street got a new roof.

Im sure it can happen...if it is that big, it will be more than cosmetic damage. Its a silver roof...with the sun reflecting off it, I doubt you will see the dents. Hell, the pics from I posted from the ground you can barely see the roof from the reflection.

Being gavalume it will lose that sheen in a year or two. I think they look like shit when new, but after a few years they almost look grey.

With 24ga over solid decking hail won't be a concern unless it is really large.

                    Roof looks great!

Mind if I ask who your supplier was? I'm considering going the metal route. I love the look, and the sound.
I'm on the water down near Galveston....wonder if it meets windstorm codes?

Windstorm isnt a problem, just screw spacing is closer together. It is good enough for Florida hurricane standards. I got the supplies from Mueller.

is anything underneath the ridge cap that would keep water from seeping between the metal roof and shingle?

Is installing a metal roof over shingle common practice? Or just when added to an existing house/roof?

There is a ridge cap trim that you can see in the last picture. There are also foam closures that seal between the ridge cap and the rpanel.

Metal over shingle is fine.. Like adding a 2nd layer of shingle. Standing seam needs to go over osb and underlayment. The shingle will be a 2nd drainage plain if the metal roof was to leak. Mueller actually says it doesn't hurt to have rpanel over shingle in their installation literature.

Havent seemed to do much productive on the house. Been working 65-75 hours a week...but today was the first day off in two weeks and WE HAVE LIGHT!!!
I only had one light bulb laying around...but it works. I installed and ran the wiring for the recessed lighting for the kitchen and living room

My ghetto rigged new breaker panel for now. I will be able to test all the circuits until its time to mount the new box.

Got this fridge delivered today. Wasnt planning on buying it this early but it was half off

I'm sure it's in here, but I don't want to go back digging for it. What is you're target date for completion? Or move in, anyway. No matter what, they're never really "completed."
